An autograph manuscript judgment written c. 1794 in response to the petition of a suspect English born citizen of France who has been dismissed from his position as postillion with the French Army Postal Service. Berthier, then a brigadier-general restores the man to his job. He will go on to be Napoleon's chief of staff, Marshal of France, Prince of Neufchatel and of Wagram the right hand man who shared the emperor's own carriage of every campaign and translated Napoleon's strategic intentions into the necessary detailed orders. The 1794 petition with Berthier's response in dark ink measures 15" x 9.75" and has some edge chipping and separation at the principal fold. Framed in double glass. $250
160. Marquis Nicholas Du Barry-Conti, Count D'Hargicourt; a folio power of attorney directed to the Lord Chancellor of London, signed by Du Barry, and dated 22 September, 1795 with red wax seals and endorsement signed by Fred. Louis Klapp empowering his nephew Count of Juillac to receive 10,000 French Livres owed to the Duke and held in England from the estate of his "defunct sister-in-law" Countess Du Barry (1746-1793). Choice!$400
The infamous Mme. Du Barry was born Jeanne Becu, a peasant girl. She grew up to be an attractive woman who caught the eye of Count Du Barry who married her off to his brother Count William Du Barry. She matured under William's tutelage to become the mistress of the aging king Louis XV, and served him during the last five years of his life. The Du Barry family did quite well during this period prior to the French Revolution. Mme Du Barry assembled a marvelous collection of jewels but was robbed during the Revolution. The pieces were offered on the London market and it was here that the Du Barrys tried to obtain them.
There is enough glamour and history involved in this document to inspire another Dumas novel. In addition the red seals of Du barry and the Principality of Waldstein survive beautifully. Unique and uniquely interesting.

164. Prince Henry of Schwartzburg-Arnstadt-Sonderhausen (reigned 1740-1756) a parchment document and wax seal in wood box. The contract confers after the passing away of his predecessor, Prince Gunther, a fief to his relatives, the three brothers Johann Christoph, Johann Gottfried and Christian Friedrich, with reference to a family settlement of heritage issues. Dated March 11, 1722. $1200
The three Schwartzenburg counties, by late 17th early 18th century raised to principalities, are situated in Thuringia in the middle of Germany. Being all three of limited surface and economic strength the family concluded in 1722 the mentioned settlement by which the first born son or next male relative was to succeed to reign, while other members of the family could be attributed plots of land or other rights of economic value as a fee, i.e., long-term loan which was to fall beck to the owning ruling prince if the tenant would pass away without leaving an heir.
At the end of the document it is mentioned that the Emperor had ratified the family settlement of 1722. The document evokes several administrative officers who contribute to its establishment .It is dated November 14, 1741 and signed by Prince Henry in his own hand. The chancery's handwriting is difficult to decipher.
