CHINESE SNUFF BOTTLE COLLECTION

The Chinese snuff bottle was first used in the middle of the 17th century designed with utilitarian practicality yet they illustrated the artistic refinement of the times. The habit of taking snuff from these small bottles spread slowly from the emperor's court in Peking.

As the habit became more popular, all types of materials were used from the most rare to the most humble. These materials included semi-precious stones, glass, metal, porcelain and organic materials such as wood, bamboo, ivory, gourds, nuts, bone and lacquer.

Snuff is produced from tobacco which is ground to a fine powder to which herbs, spices and various aromatic substances are added.

Snuff was initially considered a medicine and was therefore placed in the small medicine bottles already being used, with the simple additions of a cork and spoon to produce the Chinese equivalent of a snuff box.

Both Europeans and Americans became caught up in collecting snuff bottles. Many of the first collectors were involved with shipping or travel to China and brought snuff bottles back home.

Today there is a rapidly growing number of collectors spread throughout the world who are fascinated by these small, manageable objects and attracted by their aesthetic and tactile qualities. Auctions held worldwide reflect this deepening interest with a cross section of prices for all tastes and purses.
