Also a Late Dynastic or Ptolemaic scarab inlay of red glass, now covered with black patina. The cowroids intact, one well worn, the other moderately so. L: 14-22 mm. Found Israel. $275/3
152. Egyptians in Israel, ca. 1600-400 B.C. Lot of three, a small scarab, cowroid, and a scaraboid. Cowroid 2nd Intermediate or New Kingdom , still within original electrum bezel, with lotus device and faint traces of blue glaze. Scaraboid, ca. 3rd Intermediate Period, in taffy-colored agate. Naturalistic funerary scarab in hematite, late Period. Scarab with slight chip, otherwise all well preserved and choice. L: 11-15 mm. Found Israel. $500/3
153. Syro-Levantine, ca. 14th-10th century B.C. Conoidal stamp in steatite of the sort and style circulating in early Israel. Seal engraved with deer: a doe nurses a calf, to the side a stag grazes. In field, plant motif. H: 26 mm. Found Israel. $400
154. Israel, 8th-6th century B.C. Lot of two shekel weights in creme-tan and gray-tan limestone or calcite. The smallest one of simple ovoid shape; weight: 33.39 gms. Also a larger two shekel weights in creme-tan marble or crystalline limestone. Of truncated spheroid shape, simple yet attractive. D: 43 mm.; weight: 88.27 gms. Intact and excellent. Fine lot. Found Israel. $600/2
155. Israel, 8th-6th century B.C. An inscribed half shekel weight in red and pink limestone, of spheroid shape like that seen in previous lot. Engraved on top, a Hebrew "G." or "gimel". Weight: 5.27 gms. Intact and very fine. Scarce. Found Israel. $300
156. Levantine, ca. 8th-6th century B.C. Another weight, attractively shaped as a rounded cone with grooved loop hanger on top, with raised disc base -- perhaps a jar lid, but weighs in close to shekel weight (30.25 gms). Intact and choice. L: 32 mm.; 26 mm. Good lot. $450
157. Levantine, ca. 500-100 B.C. Lot two scarabs, one carved of carnelian-agate, and a Ptolemaic inlay in blue glass. The stone piece rather neatly shaped, with simple legs -- a little chipped and patinated. The glass sharp, but with chip at thorax. L: 22 mm each. Found Israel. $300/2
158. Scythic-Roman Periods, A lot of 8 arrowheads, six bronze, two in iron; all found in Israel. L: 30-80 mm. Some encrusted and chipped. All found in Israel. $75/8
159. Palmyra Area or South Arabian, ca. 1st-3rd century A.D. attractive little footed dish in white/creme, lightly veined alabaster. Dish rectangular with two scalloped edges. Bowl walls spherical on top but a truncated pyramid on back. Dot-circle ornament around rim of bowl. L: 3.5". Intact and well preserved. Nice. $425
160. Herodian Palestine, c. 100 B. C. A well-preserved buff clay round bodied jug with handle. H: 11.5 cm. Found Israel. $125
161. Roman Palestine, 2nd century A.D. Pleasant little bronze ring with rounded, swelling shoulders and sharply tapering band. Engraved on slightly raised bezel, a "gryllos" device: janiform heads of youthful Dionysius comprise a triangular cluster of grapes. Vine branches and tendrils above head. Small break at smallest part of band, otherwise intact and virtually pristine. W: 22 mm. With earthen and black patina. Nice. Found Israel. $200
162. Roman Palestine, 2nd century A.D. Ringstone of truncated cone shape, in attractive bloodstone -- dark olive to blue-green, with red spots. Device: lion walking in profile, holding a bull's head in mouth. Five letter inscription in field. Intact and pristine. L: 14.7 mm. Motif akin to that seen on the "Gnostic" gems. Found Israel. $300
163. Roman Judaea, 4th century A.D. Twin-handled cosmetic vial in green glass. The tubular vial with swelling body and funnel mouth. Intact and perfect, with very slight iridescence. H: 4". Found Israel. $300
164. Late Roman or Byzantine Period, ca. 5th-8th century, large disc-shaped weight in green glass, with subsequent addition of menorah (done in antiquity?) to face. Very fine condition. D: 2.4". This class of weights scarce. $375
165. Ancient Beads, ca. 2nd millennium B.C. 1st millennium A.D. Lot of two necklaces. One comprised mainly of blue, tubular Egyptian mummy beads alternating earlier spherical frit beads in white; a spoon-shaped Sumerian bead forms the pendant. L: 17". Also another necklace, comprised primarily of spherical and ovoid Roman glass beads in a fine cobalt blue, alternating with clear one with choice silvery iridescence. Antique silver beads are interspersed as accents. L: 25". Attractive lot. Found Israel. $500/2
166. Ancient Beads, ca. 2nd millennium B.C. - 1st millennium A.D. Attractive hard stone necklace. Most are earlier period ovoid carnelians plus some Sasanian era bicones, alternating with late Egyptian disc beads in faience, along with Egypto-Roman bone vessel-shaped pendants. L: 24". 167. Iron Age Lot, ca. 700-600 B.C. Bronze penannular bracelet, well worn, with animal head finials? W: 3.25". Also a sharply molded clay head from an Edomite idol or votive figurine. The face wearing cap, its deep-set eyes with strongly accentuated brows. H: 1.6". Found Israel. $200/2
168. Ceramic Lot, including a small, simple, once blue-gazed terra cotta ushabti from Greco-Roman Egypt. Also, a clay pipe bowl from Ottoman Turkey, a fragmentary Byzantine zoomorphic bottle, shaped as a bull, in red-orange clay, and an attractive female figurine in buff clay, but lacking the head. 175. Iran, late 19th century. An amulet made of glass imitating carnelian with five lines of Hebrew script on each side. On one side two tiny birds are engraved. The heraldic-like shape of this amulet goes back a thousand years to the Sasanian period. W: 5.5 cm. Drilled on top for suspension. $300
176. Iran, late 19th century. An amulet made of cast and chased silver, of shield shape with scalloped edging, and engraved with cabalistic motif: a grid of twenty-five squares, with a single Hebrew letter in each. Very fine; W: 3". $350

181. Roman, c. end 1st cent. B.C. to 1st cent. A.D. a nice marble head fragment of Apollo, his hair is tied in back in a bun with pompadour style in front. His right fragmented arm and hand resting atop his head. A little chipping on nose and chin. H: 8 cm. A lovely classical sculpture on professional mount. A pleasant and affordable example of this famous sculptural type. $1650
182. Rome, 2nd-3rd cent. A. D. A pleasant bronze jug of simple but attractive form, separately applied handle; minor restoration at base. H: 17 cm. $1000
183. Roman, perhaps Gallo-Roman, 2nd-3rd century A.D. Bronze figurine of Apollo, standing in flexed pose, with weight on one leg. His bow hangs at his back, and he holds uncertain item in one hand. Stolid, stylized modeling; a row of sunk holes along the strap on his torso, as if the strap was once inlaid in a different metal. One hand absent, otherwise very fine. H: 2.9"; on custom base. With black and green patina. $650
184. Roman Anatolia, 2nd-3rd century AD. Attractive votive figurine in beige orange ware with creme slip. Standing figure of one of the Dioscuri, in military garb, and holding a spear and grasping his sword with other hand. He stands on high plinth. Repaired with restorations to feet. The deity's features strongly reminiscent of those of Caracalla, Emperor 198-217 A.D.). H: 8.25". $600
185. Rome, 2nd-3rd cent. A. D. A nicely carved bone fragment with a rather erotic bas-relief carving of a man and woman making love. Unfortunately the sculpture is interrupted by a break in the bone. The miniature carving has been repaired. The workmanship is really still quite clear and attractive. H: 4 cm. $400

187. Roman Syria, ca. 2nd-3rd century A.D. Circular amuletic pendant in black-blue glass, with molded motif on each side associated with seafaring. Obverse with Europa riding bull (Zeus), her garment lifted up by the wind. Reverse with dolphin entwined about an anchor. Pierced for suspension but hole only goes half way through the diameter. Intact with silvery patina. Size: 19 x20 mm. $150
188. Roman Palestine or Syria, ca. 3rd-4th century A.D. A small bust shaped like an altar or the base of a column. The features simple, schematic, with the face on the cylindrical section, a hand(?) on the "breast" in the square section. Intact. H: 2". $250

190. Byzantine or Early Islamic, ca. 6th-9th century A.D. Bottle of flattened shape for precious liquids. Robust vessel of thick green glass, the ovoid body strongly compressed. The short cylindrical neck with broad, flat rim (a little chipped). Glass with creme patina-iridescence. H: 2.3". $350

191. A lot of three ancient weights including a very fine large circular Byzantine green glass weight (or ingot) width 6.5 cm, thickness one millimeter; weight 95.43 gms. The second brown glass weight is unfinished on one side and nicely worked on the other, weight 13.42 gm. The last weight is a small bronze many-sided weight of 14.45 grams. $500/3
192. Seljuk Turkish Period, c. 1200 A.D. A blue glass vessel stop with a seated, turbaned and bearded man facing front, head slightly to left. Diameter: 3 cm. Perfect and quite scarce. $500
193. Another Islamic glass vessel stamp. This example in deep green glass with knobby headed male head facing. Diameter: 3 cm. Very nice! Along with a second vessel stamp of a lion mask, not fully formed, on a deep violet glass which appears black - perhaps Late Roman. See Edgar, Graeco-Egyptian Glass, Pl. 194. Roman Carthage, 1st-2nd century A.D. Lot of two disc lamps, with broad circular body, small ring handles, and short ovate spout. In deep red-orange clay and brownish slip, uncertain device in discus, and chipped spout. Also a heavy lamp in buff ware with brown-gray slip, with bearded and veiled(?) bust left, from worn mold; petal border around. L: 4"; 4.2". $150/2
195. Roman Carthage, 2nd-3rd century A.D. Simple well crafted lamp, heavy and robust, with fine red slip. Plain disc with raised ribbed border, and tab handle. On base, inscribed into the wet clay before firing, a word or name in cursive Greek, or perhaps Punic script. Thus rare! Intact and choice, with cleanable deposits. L: 4.65". Interesting "autograph" piece. $250

198. Roman Carthage, ca. 3rd century A.D. Lamp of shape as previous, but with ring handle and image showing the bust of wreathed man wearing tunic -- presumably an emperor, since the angular, craggy features resemble a few of the "soldier" emperors of the 3rd century. A wreath border outlines the discus. Small age crack between the fill holes, otherwise intact and very fine plus, with much of slip remaining. L: 5". $250
199. Roman Carthage, 3rd-4th century A.D. Lot of two, one a round lamp like preceding lot, the other the more elongated subsequent shape. Earlier lamp worn, with animal(?) in discus, and "X" border around. Intact. L: 5.2". Later lamp with trough extending from discus to nozzle. Device, rosette with border of angle hatching around. Handle missing, otherwise lamp quite fresh in appearance. nozzle blackened from use. L: 4.25". $150/2

234. Turkey, Early Islamic Period, c. 800 A. D. A brown glazed ceramic "grenade" of "spinning top" shape, hollow for insertion of incendiaries. An early example of Islamic explosive devices!. H: 12 cm; W:8.5 cm. Rare! $350

One with stepped bezel holding a blue glass ("turquoise") gem; one engraved with what appears to be twin palmettos; last Timurid with stylized Kufic inscription. 253. India, 16th-17th century. "Temple toy" in high tin brass -- a well crafted warrior on his charger. The warrior with peaked cap and wearing large pendant over breast, holds flail. The leaping horse with chamfron and ornate harness. The group on wheeled platform for pulling. H: 5.2". Amusing, with a very decorative charm. $800
254. India, 17th-18th century. Unusual and rare pendant "amulet" in bronze. Pendant shaped rather like the Islamic octagonal amuletic plaques in stone, but this more floral or leaf-looking. Pendant engraved on both sides: bearded man in long tunic with jeweled belt, his arms in symbolic gesture; back with recumbent Nandi Bull. Elaborate modeled loop of Nandi Bull on lotus, flanked by two molded rings. Intact and very fine. H: 4.75". $500

Wood panel with figurative repoussé cover in silver, which looks to be late 19th century. The cross with Christ on it is detachable. Icon with some restoration and overpainting. Otherwise very fine.
