58. Burma, c. 16th century, an imperfect bronze casting of a horse rider with five attendants holding on to horse's legs and tail. In two pieces and obviously in need of proper repair. Ht: 9". As is. $300

 

59. Boar’s Tusk lot. Two pieces. Handsome little ring of Tribal Indonesia, with nicely carved figurine in wood attached with rattan. The figure wears conical cap and has human(?) hair bound to it. Also crescent shaped object, New Guinea, comprised of two tusks flanking central "grip" wrapped cloth and cowry shells. L: 7"; 9.5". $200/2

 

60. Mexico, Yucatan, c. 750-950 A.D., a very desirable carved green jade pendant of irregular rectangular shape. A facing head dominates the piece. Pierced at each end for suspension. Pendants this lovely are rarely seen on today's market. L: 1.75". $1,000 up

 

61. Indonesia, Java, a "wayang topeng" mask in polychromed wood, with red predominant. A fine example of the native dancing mask. Ht: 10". $150

 

62. Belgian Tapestries, probably 19th century, one depicting an artist painting a portrait of a bar maid while his companions look over the artist's shoulder. Size 39" x 25". Signed F. Vinea; along with a smaller, 19" x 35", a fox hunting scene. $200/2

 

63. Burma. A beautiful wall-hanging (kalaga) with metallic thread embroidery, sequins, colored glass stones, couched appliqué, etc. This piece, 33" x 64", has two reclining genie in center, lion-dog borders. Visually stunning! $300

67. Africa, Nigeria, Ibibio Tribe, a tall and well carved dark wooden statue of a man holding his penis with both hands. Unusual. Some age cracks. Ht: 34". $375

108. Africa, Cameroon, Nso Kakiri, a large wooden "funerary" mask; all in black with solemn expression on face. Lips are exaggerated and style is similar in appearance to that of the Olmec in Central America. L: 15". $250

113. Africa, Nigeria, , a very unusual mask. Large and rectangular with mouth open revealing long tongue and extremely long chin. Some good age! Ht: 19". $300

129. Papua New Guinea, Sepik Region. An "Orator’s Stool", nearly 6 feet tall!!! It probably represents an ancestor. It is used in the men’s house, where a bunch of leaves or grass is left on the seat. Whomever holds this bunch "has the floor" and speaks as if he were in the presence and under the protection of the ancestor. It is not used as a seat, but is mainly used in rites and settlement of disputes. This very imposing example appears as a standing figure(on a base), with a flat platform behind. Beneath this "seat" are two crocodiles, left and right, and a standing human figure exactly behind. These three figures serve as caryatids. The main figure’s face is covered with clay, and nassa and cowry shells. There are also shells around the feet, wrists, bases of the caryatids, and on elbows. The main pigment is black, with red, yellow and white accents. H: 69". Most impressive. $2,500.00

At base of head, a triangular projection on either side, presumably to make extraction more difficult. Arrow's tang chipped, otherwise piece pristine with fine earthen-green patina. L: 2". The effect of the motif being both vegetable and animal. Intact with slight wear; one end a little weathered. L: 50.8 mm. A quite handsome object, both for workmanship and material. $900

 

192. Mesopotamia, Jemdt Nasr, ca. 3100-2900 B.C. Amygdaloid type stamp with drilled sinkings on base, roughly suggestive of animal forms. Seal in creme-tan marble or calcite. Intact with moderate wear. L: 1.6". The "classic" Jemdt Nasr seal. $450

Mesopotamia, Jemdt Nasr, ca. 3000-2800 B.C. an elongated, almost tooth-shaped, pendant-amulet in the form of a leaping bull, its forelegs tucked underneath to emphasizing the surging power of the animal -- the treatment of the rear legs perhaps also indicating an anthropomorphizing trait. In drilled style, two confronted seated sphinxes on hatched exergue. Above, plant symbol, and single line border around edge. Some chips and edge nicks, otherwise intact with modest wear. W: 25 mm. Interesting peripheral work, perhaps from Syria, in a less common material. $800

201. Egypt, XVIII Dynasty, ca. time of Amenhotep III. A large deep blue-green faience scarab, now mostly an olive green in appearance. Neat realistic beetle with small winglets. The deeply incised intaglio with Ptah holding wedj scepter, and facing pharaoh wearing White Crown, standing next to scepter; above, uraeii-flanked sun disc, below cartouche. Below bezel, on one side of ring, the inscription: "Ptah Ta-Tenon, the creator god of Memphis." Intact and wearable, green patina. H: 30 mm, W: 28.8 mm. Cf. Hall, BMC Scarabs, no. 2705. 207. Egypt, Late Dynastic or Ptolemaic, ca. 600-300 B.C. Erotic figurine or amulet carved in a hard crystalline brown limestone, with darker mottling. On rectangular base, figure sits on leg with other raised to help prop up the enormous phallus that rests on his head. Features deftly and expressively rendered, with ears protruding, and face rather negroid-looking. Man's ribs prominent, the back slightly humped -- a dwarf perhaps intended? Intact with minor nicks on base; once with loop(?). H: 55.8 mm. A fine little sculpture. Rare! $3000

 

208. Egypt, Late Period or Ptolemaic, ca. 500-300 B.C. Another similar example but this with dwarfish figure sitting behind his huge forward pointing phallus. Carved in a light colored, softer, limestone on which the skin tones have been painted in red. Figure holds an uncertain object in hands, a drum(?). A few chips on base, but essentially intact; much paint remaining. L: 88 mm. A good example. Scarce. $1000

 

209. Egypt, Late Period or Ptolemaic, ca. 500-300 B.C. Another painted limestone phallic figure like previous but this figure obviously a musician. He uses his phallus as a base to support the harp he's playing. On this example even more of the red paint of his skin survives. Harp chipped and phallus fragmentary, otherwise minor wear. 210. Greco-Roman, ca. 2nd century B.C. - 2nd century A.D. Lot of two bullae. One in terra cotta with papyrus imprint on back: nude god holding scepter, with right arm extended -- likely Zeus but eagle not visible. Second one in lead with Zeus standing three-quarters frontal. His lower body draped in chiton and cloak; scepter to side. Both intact and well preserved. H: 21 mm.; 30 mm. $150/2

 

211. Roman, ca. 1st century B.C. - 1st century A.D. Interesting amuletic bead. Ancient bead, Roman or perhaps an even earlier antique, carved with three figures. Bead brown chalcedony with one end clearish. Central figure Priapus-herm, on one side a satyr(?), third figure looks similar but appears to be wearing a modius. Intact with moderate wear. L: 23 mm. 212. Roman, ca. 2nd-3rd century A.D. Circular amuletic pendant in black-blue glass, with molded motif on each side associated with seafaring. Obverse with Europa riding bull (Zeus), her garment lifted up by the wind. Reverse with dolphin entwined about an anchor. Pierced for suspension but hole only goes half way through the diameter. 223. Egypt, Graeco-Roman Alexandria, ca. B.C. 100-100 A.D. an amusing theatrical caricature of a slave or freedman. The standing figure, probably once ithyphallic, wearing exaggerated mask typical of comedies, and padded costume to make him look fat and pot-bellied. He holds his left hand over his left eye as if peering out at his audience. Piece sharp but right hand and left foot are missing. H: 8 cm. $1500

 

224. Anatolia or Northern Syria, prior to ca. 1500 B.C. A bronze votive nude statue of a man, his arms out-stretched as if ready to hug. The workmanship is stiff and crude somewhat reminiscent of Hittite work. The face appears modeled after the innumerable terra-cotta Astarte figures from this same region. H: 14.5 cm. On stand. 227. Syria, or possibly Southern Anatolia, 3rd to early 2nd millennium B.C. Ceramic votive figurine of recumbent ram, in dark gray or blackware. Stylized figure interestingly rendered in forward thrusting angles, giving the animal a sense of hard solidity combined with nervous repose. Horns comprised of flattened discs, with heavy collar(?) over neck. Chip to nose; museum or inventory number inked on base. L:2". Scarce. $450

 

228. Syria or Palestine, ca. later 2nd or early 1st millennium B.C. Shallow circular sandstone offering dish. Dish essentially disc-shaped with extended lip. Grooved and hatched edges at lip, notched triangular ornament on rest of rim. Base of truncated tripod legs shaped as connected papyrus stalks. Rim chipped at one spot, otherwise fine condition. 229. Phoenicia, c. 7th century B.C. a bronze boat pendant, the bow and stern are surmounted by stylized animal heads. A "cabin" is amidships, and an oval mount is atop the cabin. 232. Palmyra Area or South Arabian, ca. 1st-3rd century A.D. attractive little footed dish in white/creme, lightly veined alabaster. Dish rectangular with two scalloped edges. Bowl walls spherical on top but a truncated pyramid on back. Dot-circle ornament around rim of bowl. L: 3.5". Intact and well preserved. Nice. $425

233. Sumer, Warka, ca. 3000-2500 B.C. a complete marble pommel or handle shaped in the form of a lion's head. One side is clear of surface encrustation and reveals a delightful white marble patinated finish. The other side is still heavily encrusted. The piece is hollowed out for the now missing wood or metal tang. It's apparent that the eyes were once inlaid. H: 6 cm. $1200

234. Iran, Sarkizabad, 2000 BC. Creme ware pot with red and white slip. Vessel ovoid with wide funnel neck, small single handle and very small ring foot. White upper half of pot with geometric ornament of bands with checkerboard-hatched lozenges. Red bottom with zig-zags. Repair to handle, with overall fine preservation for its age. H: 4.3". $750

 

235. Iran, Sarkizabad, 2000 BC. "Kantharos"-like vessel with low broad body, wide funnel neck and pair of small pinched handles. 239. Western Iran, Luristan, ca. 2nd millennium B.C., probably late. Good sized hair ornament, or perhaps a finger ring, in silver. Ring of very heavy round wire, the ends tapered, and bent into an overlapping coil. Each end with chased herringbone patterns. Intact and choice. $450

 

240. Western Iran, Luristan, or Southern Caspian Area, ca. 1200-800 BC. A most interesting little figurine in bronze of a rider high on the back of a dromedary(?) camel. The object simply, almost crudely, modeled but done with much expressive action. The rider's arms raised and tautly arched with the camel's head high and twisted back, as if the reins were sharply pulled in. Of special note is the clearly detailed camel saddle. Intact with crusty brown and green patina. H: 2,6". Rare! $1350

 

241. Western Iran, Luristan, or Tepe Sialk Area, ca. 1200-800 B.C. Large disc-headed pin of wrought bronze of standard form: wide ovoid head with seven circular bosses connected by an incised six-pointed star. Border of raised dots around head. Pin slightly tapered and of circular section. Finely persevered with green patina; tip of pin missing. L: 9.5". Good example, scarce. Cf. Moorey nos. #354, 355. $500

 

242. Western Iran, Luristan, ca. 1200-600 B.C. Lot of seven pins in bronze, ranging from large to medium size. The three largest with domed or mushroom-shaped heads with bodies having circular moldings and bands of incised hatch marks. One very simple, with lobed head and incised zig-zag borders. One with vase or pomegranate finial, and another similar but with three projecting knobs. Smallest with incised chevrons. All nice, with various patinas. L: 4.3" -8.4". Found Pirkooh, Gilan Province. $400/7

 

243. Western Iran, Luristan, ca. 1100-800 BC. A fine "Mistress of Animals" in bronze, large and robust. Of typical form, likely female with heavy pendant necklaces and dual, symmetrical feline feet. At waist an additional janiform face, this one bearded. Figure grasps paired roaring lions, who have rooster heads at their base. Stylized figure well crafted and finely detailed, with crusty green patina and perhaps repair to waist. Along with large "bottle" base, with narrow spool-shaped body, thin cylindrical neck, wide everted mouth, and two rows of decorative moldings. A choice specimen, one of the best we've handled in recent years. Overall height: 14.5". Cf. Moorey no. 180, but both heads bearded; nos. 198, 208 for base. $1500

 

244. Western Iran, Luristan, ca. 1100-800 BC. Similar to previous but a little smaller and of slimmer proportions. Both janiform faces more feminine looking, with v-shaped collar or necklaces below one and wide girdle below other. Apparently intact, with crusty green patina. Remains of mounting pin at bottom. Also with slimmer and slightly smaller "bottle" base. Overall height: 14". A good example of series. Cf. Moorey nos. 176, 178 for finial, nos. 198, 208 for base. $1000

 

245. Western Iran, Luristan and Marlik Area, ca. 1200-800 B.C. Lot of four small goats pendants in bronze, three of which are looped. The three with high, curved horns and globular eyes and perky tail. The smallest with beard, straighter horns, and spool-like body. All intact and nice. L: 1.3"-1.9". Good lot. $550/4

These: a nude woman holding her breasts, a bird, a bucranium, an equid(?) double protome. Also two early Islamic bronzes: a rooster finial to a pin, a kinara-like leg to a box. Penannular bracelet of springy, hammered bronze sheet, engraved with central band of zigzags, or triangles, and bordered top and bottom by similar bands of much smaller triangles. Also an antique hollow silver bracelet, Persian, hinged and with polyhedron-like finials. Piece with engraved and stamped chevron designs and central "eye"/lozenge. 254. Western Iran, Luristan, ca. 1000-700 BC. Flattish phiale-like bowl in hammered bronze sheet, with ring-like base and curved funnel rim. Interior engraved and worked en repoussé. Interior base engraved with five rosettes within two circular border of raised dots, and raised diagonal bands at outer edge. A few small holes at edge where metal has thinned, otherwise sharp and choice, with green patina. Bowl shows remains of gilding or silvering -- scarce thus. W: 5". $450

 

255. Western Iran, Luristan, ca. 1000-700 BC. A delightful pin in bronze with an amusing, very stylized antelope head finial. Animal with spindly snout, bulbous eyes, and long stick-like ears. Choice, with fine green patina. L: 6.4". Delightful! Cf. Moorey nos. 312, 313. $300

 

256. Western Iran, Luristan, ca. 900-600 BC. Black serpentine carving of a mythical horse. The figure highly stylized and blocky in appearance, with incised circle-dot ornament over the body, and X's at the nose. The animal elongated with short feet. Large piercing entering at the front legs and going into the chest. Perhaps the finial of a pin. L: 3.1". Intact with moderate wear and a few nicks. Very rare! $950

This item should probably considered a "winged equid," with this being a stone version of the bronze pin finials seen in Moorey nos. 324-7. Although more elongated than those, the profiles of both remain strikingly similar.

265. Thailand, Ban Chiang, ca. 1500 B.C. One half of a carved multipiece mold in pinkish sandstone for an ax head. Head elongated with convex cutting edge; the horizontal socket integral to the back of blade and has ribbed ornament. Also, an actual copper ax which came from a similar but smaller mold. Both ax and mold in choice condition, with only small chip at corner of blade. L: 5.2"; 4.5". Scarce and interesting. $500/2 Anna Malter

266. Greco-Iberian, ca. 600-525 B.C. Handsome votive figure of bearded man., He stands with legs together, knees lightly flexed. He ids dressed in clinging short chiton with tightly cinched wide belt -- almost giving him the appearance of wearing breeches. Chased details of the man's toes, eyes, mouth, hair locks, ears and fillet. Arms missing, otherwise intact with choice deep green patina. Very fine Greek-style work. Scarce and choice. $1950

 

267. Boeotia or Central Greece, early 5th century B.C. Small protome of nicely molded female bust in late archaic style. In very fine grained buff-orange terra cotta, she wears peplos and her long hair braided into a wreath about the head. Sharply molded with traces of red paint on the hair. H: 2.8", on plastic. 268. Italy, Etruria or Sicily, ca. .475-450 BC. Head from a votive goddess figurine in orangey-tan terra cotta, a little coarse grained. The mature woman wears stephane, her hair wavy at the brow. Pleasant early classical style. H: 2.5"; on brass stand. $300

A robust, heavy caelene footed bowl with interior pressed design of six concentric bands of hatching, and a rosette of five dotted ovoid with tiny central medallion of Medusa or lion's mask. D: 7". 270. Italy, Apulia c. 330-300 B.C. Another caelene footed bowl but this with five impressed acanthus palmettes around a central rosette. Pleasant and interesting study piece -- bowl a little warped during the firing, and the color variations clearly show how other vessels were stacked atop it in the kiln. Slight chip at foot, two small areas of flaked glaze on exterior, otherwise intact and very fine. D: 7". $375

 

271. Italy, Apulia c. 330-300 B.C. Red figure fish plate in buff-tan ware. Dish broad and shallow on short foot, with wide turned out rim and central depression to hold the "sauce." On black-painted ground are two bass or perch-like fish and a skate, in dilute red wash with details in black and added white or yellow. Reserve wave pattern around rim of dish. Surprisingly intact and free of repairs: two slight age cracks but piece strong and stable. D: 8.25". A fine example of this scarce and popular series. $1600

 

272. Seleucid or Parthian, Asia Minor and Palestine, 3rd-1st century BC. Lot of two ceramic pieces. One a slim wheel-turned unguentarium in gray-brown ware, Hellenistic Era, probably found Israel. Also a molded large fragment of a figurine, a harpist in orange ware. Said to be from Pergamon. H: 7.4"; 5". First pristine, second very fine. $200/2

274. Graeco-Roman, c. 1st cent. B.C. to 1st cent. A.D. A very fine handled mirror in bronze with excellent green patina. The bail handles with baluster finials; the mirror is hinged so that the piece can be folded for protecting the polished and gilded interior mirror surfaces which to this day are still partially reflective. D: 6". An outstanding object. Probably made in either Antioch or Ephesus. $3500

 

275. Roman, c. end 1st cent. B.C. to 1st cent. A.D. a nice marble head fragment of Apollo, his hair is tied in back in a bun with pompadour style in front. His right fragmented arm and hand resting atop his head. A little chipping on nose and chin. H: 8 cm. A lovely classical sculpture on professional mount. A pleasant and affordable example of this famous sculptural type. $1650

 

276. Roman Syria, ca. 1st-2nd century A.D. An exceptional, fine quality handle and mount for a box, in raised and chased silver. The mount in the form of a lion's head with ring through its mouth, on a square backing. The head rounded and finely detailed. At corners of backing plate a short "rivet," each with an ornamental openwork head of domed form. Slight repair at one cheek, otherwise piece remarkably well preserved. H: 3.3". 277. Roman Phoenicia, 1st-2nd century A.D. Attractive, elaborate handle from a bronze lidded jug. Piece very well crafted with intricate Egyptianizing palmette at base, and twin finely modeled duck heads at top. Handle lacking the liftable lid (in the manner of those seen on German steins), otherwise intact with crusty green and dark brown patina. L: 5.25". Nice. Found Lebanon. $475

281. Rome, ca. 1st-2nd century AD. A bronze ornamental pendant found in Britain but perhaps of Romano-Egyptian or Phoenician origin. Base of palmette form, with two volute-shaped leaves with elongated multi-petal flower. Base with large hole for stringing. In choice condition with fine dark olive patina. A decorative fitting for furniture, an elaborate vessel, or possibly even armor? L: 1.9". Nice. $100

282. Egypto-Roman or Parthian Asia Minor, 1st-2nd century AD. Cute votive figure of Anatolian rider god(?) on horse (or Harpokrates in Asian garb?). Figure wears pleated tunic, cloak, and leggings. The horse steps sprightly, with fore leg raised. The whole on high rectangular plinth. In choice condition but, sadly, missing head of rider. H: 5.25". Said to have been found at Pergamon. $150

 

283. Rome, Eastern Empire, 2nd-3rd century A.D. Sizable unguentarium in deep green glass -- the glass quite thick. Small piriform body, long cylindrical neck, and large mouth with flat everted rim. 284. Rome, c. 2nd-3rd century A.D. a bronze statuette of Venus. She stands nude, but for armlets and drapery about her legs, with hands positioned to preserve her modesty. Hair with distinctive knot at top of head; long tresses at side. One arm missing, otherwise well-preserved with green patina. H: 10.2 cm, 0n plastic stand. An attractive piece, probably from Syria. $1950

285. Rome, 2nd-3rd century AD. A fine ornamental bronze appliqué of circular form with facing bust of Apollo, perhaps assimilated to Helios. He wears cloak over bare shoulders, and possibly a radiate crown, the rays once set with other metal, some of which remains. A quality piece but somewhat worn on the face. D: 1.3"; on walnut base. $700

 

286. Roman Anatolia, 2nd-3rd century AD. Attractive votive figurine in beige orange ware with creme slip. Standing figure of one of the Dioscuri, in military garb, and holding a spear and grasping his sword with other hand. He stands on high plinth. Repaired with restorations to feet. (The deity's features strongly reminiscent of those of Caracalla, Emperor 198-217 A.D.). H: 8.25". $600

288. Kushan Gandhara, 3rd-4th century A.D. Torso of a satyr-like(?) figure in stucco. Plumpish youthful male with neatly arranged hair wearing bandeau with forehead ornament. 289. Kushan Gandhara, 3rd-4th century A.D. Pleasant schist fragment from a wall facade. Scene of cupid-like figure (without wings) stands in pose of an adorant, beneath a gothic-like architrave with dentate reliefs and grape and floral supports. He is flanked on either side by pilasters and two short Indo-Persian columns, each with small stuppa-like structure. Sharp little carving, in deep relief with chipping to one side and earthen patina. L: 10.25". $875

 

290. Iran, Nishapur(?), ca. 9th-10th century A.D. Bottle in bronze somewhat emulating contemporary glass shapes. Footed bottle of tapered cylindrical sections, with ovoid shoulders, narrow funnel mouth which is ringed with seven projecting granules. Intact with crusty brown and green patina. H: 6". Nice example of early Islamic bronze vessels, which are scarce. $450

 

291. Iran, or Mesopotamia, ca. 10th-15th century A.D. Lot of three bronze rings all with engraved designs. One with stepped bezel holding a blue glass ("turquoise") gem; one engraved with what appears to be twin palmettes; last Timurid with stylized Kufic inscription. A pleasant group, much better than average. H: 19-30 mm. $175/3

 

292. Iran, Seljuk Period, Nishapur, ca. 12th-13th century A.D., a fine blue glazed miniature tea pot or ewer, of broad ovoid shape on narrow foot. Vivid dark turquoise glaze with vertical black stripes. Minor repairs, piece somewhat iridescent. H: 8 cm. $750

Two blown glass ewers, closely alike in appearance but one taller and handle differently applied, and smaller brown-green in color while larger is clear. Both piriform on broad foot, with long cylindrical neck and thin graceful spout. Both in choice condition. H: 6.75"; 8". $300/2

295. Iran, Qajar Period, 19th century. Glass vase in amber-green glass. shaped very much like piece of a thousand years earlier: wide funnel mouth on deep cylindrical neck, with ovoid body on ring foot. Trailed ribbing around neck. Perfect condition. H: 9". $350

 

296. Iran, Qajar Period, 19th century. Glass vase as previous, but larger, more elaborate, and in green color. This with trailed ribbing about mouth, and ruffle-like collar of pinched glass at neck. Attractive and perfect. H: 10.6". $425

 

297. Iran, Qajar Period, 19th century. Glass aquamanile of deep brown color. This shaped as a standing bird on tripod feet. Vessel mouth on bird's back and nearly flush in height. The thin, narrow spout comprised of the bird's beak. Intact and perfect. L: 7.5". Vessel probably held scented water. Scarce. $575

 

298. Iran, ca. 1950's or earlier. Ethnic jewelry lot. Lot of two large circular pendants, elaborately chased or filigreed white metal with gilding, nd set with a profusion of glass gems. Also two large pins shaped as peacocks, in similar technique. H: 2.8-4.2". $150/4

 

299. Afghanistan, Turkoman, early 20th century. A choice pair of silver cuff bracelets. set with carnelians and partially gilt. The pair very robustly made for heavy wear. Each a tapered open cylinder of crescentic section, with the face divided into three rows containing four gems each, spiked borders at sides, along with engraved arabesques and granulation. 302. India or Iran, ca. 1950's. Nicely crafted bowl in brass, copper, and tinned copper. The latter two set into the brass bowl as decorative floral, petal, and rosette inlays: the body with diagonal rows of leaves in alternating colors, the same for the shoulder but rosettes, with petals bordering the two top and bottom.
