1-An English Victorian hard stone knob from the 19th century, 2" diameter, of attractive transparent green color with its 1" high silver collar mounted on an Indian rose wood shaft with horn ferrule. Overall length 37 1/4".Estimate $200 -$300.

 

2-A decorative English cane from the l9th century with silver knob on its red real full bark malacca shaft with stag horn ferrule. The 2 3/4" high fluted knob is chased with flowers garlands and has London hallmarks 1888. The whole cane is in original condition with intensive use marks and nice patina. Overall length 37 1/2". Estimate $300 - $400.

 

3-A very decorative English cane from the l9th century with a silver horse head on a plinth, with its rare coconut wood shaft with bronze ferrule. The 3 1/2" high charming handle is well modeled, precisely chased and engraved with a lot of academic detail. The whole cane is in top original condition. Overall length 35 3/4". Estimate $600 - $800.

 

4-A large and good Russian Tula silver handle from the 19th century mounted on a well figured rosewood shaft with horn ferrule. The 4 3/4" wide and 3 1/2" high handle is from best make of its kind, well and densely decorated and inscribed in Kyrillic ÑKaukas", it bears maker hallmarks on the rim. Overall length 37". |Estimate $600 - $700.

 

5-An early and decorative European bone Ñtau" handle from the beginning of the l9th century, 3" wide and 3 1/4" high carved in the Renaissance style with a head of an old, bearded man with long hair and two colored glass eyes. The handle, which is in good condition, is mounted on a black ebony shaft with horn ferrule, its shape fits the hand very comfortably with its smooth carving. Overall length 36". Estimate $600 - $700.

 

6-An outstanding French ivory handle from the late 19th century later mounted in England on an ebony shaft with wide silver collar and bronze ferrule. The 5 1/4" wide handle is superbly carved by great master hand with a reclining nude; she has long hair and a smiling face, her feet are covered with a blanket. The 1 1/2" high silver collar is decorated with ivy leaves and flowers and engraved Presented TO W.H.BRUMPTON 1914 and bears Birmingham hallmarks 1908. The whole appealing cane is in perfect condition, its handle is smooth in the hand with a luminous surface. Overall length 35 3/4". Estimate $3.000 - $3.500.

 

7-An exceptional American cane from the 19th century with a civil war motif. The 5 1/4" high ivory handle with an eagle (the North) fighting with a snake (the South) has its cherry wood branch shaft with long horn ferrule. The strong design of the handle with consistent shape is from a great master hand, its carving is simply superb with a lot of detail and undercuts. The outstanding cane is in excellent condition with good patina. Overall length 34 1/4". Estimate $2.500 - $3.000.

 

8-An important French cane from the first half of the 19th century with ivory knob carved with dinosaurs. The turned knob of consistent shape is 2 æ" high. It is carved all over with 10 different early inhabitants of our planet, one part of them between thick and exotic vegetation, the other flying in the sky. Original thick real full bark malacca shaft with bronze ferrule. The condition is excellent, the ivory of very bright color has a gray patina, the malacca an attractive red tone. This cane is the only known example with similar motive, according to the previous owner it belonged originally to the founder of the Paris zoological state collection. Over all length 35 3/4". Estimates $2.000 - 3.000.

 

9-A superb one-of-a-kind Folk Art cane from the first half of the 19th century, most probably American with 1 3/4" wide plain silver top with engraved monogram on its very thick wood shaft all over artistically decorated with carved and painted about for over 50 various animals and items from the daily life of the owner and most cherished by him. The anchor on the top is a sign that it probably belonged to a sailor. The cane is in very fine original condition with its thick and dark varnish from the period. Overall length 35 3/4". Estimate $1.300 -$1-800.

 

10-A very good American wild wine Folk Art cane from the 19th century with knob well carved in the shape of a right hand ÑFica" with long fingers and cultivated nails. One of the fingers wears a ring. The naturally knotted one piece of wood cane is in excellent original condition with an attractive dark brown patina and 4" long bronze ferrule. Overall length 35". Estimate $1.000 - $1.200.

 

11-An American Folk Art cane from the early 19th century, consisting of a 4" wide ÑL" shaped stag horn handle on a naturally knotted oak branch shaft with bronze collar, eyelets and iron ferrule. One of the knots is engraved with a whimsical smiling man face and two others underneath with dog heads. The whole cane is in perfect original condition with a nice warm old patina. Overall length 36". Estimate $800 -$900.

 

12-An American Folk Art cane from the 19th century with round handle carved with a 6 1/2" wide and 4 1/4" high impressive stylized dog head with long muzzle and red glass eyes biting the oval jeweled shaft with bronze collar. The whole cane is probably of maple wood and has an attractive surface with dark age patina. Overall length 36 1/2". Estimate $1.200 - $ 1.000.

 

13-A decorative and large Sterling silver German crook handle from the turn of the century mounted on a rose wood shaft with horn ferrule. The 4 1/4" high and 4 3/4" wide handle is well chased with an African elephant head with large ears, long tusks and glass eyes. It bears German hallmarks on the lower collar and is in best condition. Overall length 35 3/4".Estimate $500 - $700.

 

14-A high quality Anglo-Indian ÑT" shaped silver handle from the 19th century of impressive, 6 1/4" high and 5" wide, large size well chased and engraved with two traditional figures framed by dense decoration. A smiling lady face and a tiger head decorates the tips. The handle which is in excellent condition with a beautiful surface is mounted on a rose wood shaft with horn ferrule. Overall length 37 1/2". Estimate $700 - $800.

 

15-A rare Pique English cane dated 1715 with 2 1/4" high ivory knob on its original real full bark malacca shaft with silver collar, eyelets and bronze ferrule. The turned knob with an age crack is decorated on the side with classical crossed motives, on the top it has a monogram G H beside the date 1715. The whole cane is in original condition. It has almost all its silver piquÈ and an attractive warm patina. Pique canes are much sought after and the great pride of the advanced cane collectors. Overall length 33 3/4". Estimate $1.300 - $1.600.

 

15-A rare Pique English cane dated 1715 with 2 1/4" high ivory knob on its original real full bark malacca shaft with silver collar, eyelets and bronze ferrule. The turned knob with an age crack is decorated on the side with classical crossed motives, on the top it has a monogram G H beside the date 1715. The whole cane is in original condition. It has almost all its silver pique and an attractive warm patina. Pique canes are much sought after and the great pride of the advanced cane collectors. Overall length 33 3/4". 16-A decorative English cane from the 19th century with a 4 " wide ÑL" shaped ivory handle carved with a hunting dog laying in wait for a prey on its original red colored full bark malacca shaft with attractive silver collar and stag horn ferrule. The animal is naturalistically presented laying on the ground with a long tail and a thick fur. The whole cane is in excellent original condition with warm patina. Overall length 37 3/4". Estimate $900 - $1.200.

 

17-A historical American missionary cane from the early 19th century all made from a cherry wood branch inlaid with a mother of pearl snake and an ivory skull with a bronze ferrule. The jeweled snake body is seen in three windows in the shaft, its head with inlayed eyes and nostrils shows its forked tongue. The cane belonged in the 19th century to a Jesuit who came to the US from Japan, crossed the whole country from east to west carrying it and died in NY harbor when he was going on a steamer to return to Europe. Overall length 37". Estimate $900 - $1.100.

18-A good English 3 1/4" high silver knob from the late 19th century, in the shape of a bird of prey claw holding a grooved ball and mounted on a deep black ebony shaft with black horn ferrule. The attractive knob, one of its kind, in best original condition, is hand chased and engraved and bears London Hallmarks 1890. Overall length 36 1/2". Estimate $600 -$700.

 

19-A Viennese handle from the 19th century with a chased gold plated 3 1/2" wide bronze crutch handle over a 3 1/4" high blue porcelain shaft beautifully painted with the portrait of a dog. The very decorative handle is in excellent condition and mounted on a brown ebony shaft with horn ferrule. Overall length 35". Estimate $600 -$700.

 

20-A good German Art Deco Silver handle from the turn of the century modeled and chased in the shape of a stylized eagle head with glass eyes. The 4 1/4" wide appealing handle is in excellent condition. It bears German hallmarks on the lower rim and is mounted on a deep black ebony shaft with horn ferrule. Overall length 34". Estimate $700 - $800.

 

21-A decorative German porcelain handle from the 19th century in early tau shape, mounted on a snake wood shaft with bronze collar and horn ferrule. The 4" wide and 2 1/2" high handle is modeled with baroque decorations, painted with light green color and highlighted with rich gold lines. The quality handle is unsigned but could be from Meissen. Overall length 38". Estimate $700 -$900.

 

22-An outstanding English ivory cane handle from the 19th century carved with two horseís heads in a hoof with paw ending with a belt with buckle and mounted on a snake wood shaft with horn ferrule. The 4 1/2" high handle has an attractive design, it is very precisely carved, in superb condition and with smooth luminous surface. Overall length 38 1/2". Estimate $1.300 - $1.600.

 

23-A good German Art Nouveau silver opera handle from the end of the 19th century cast and chased with St. Georgeís fighting the dragon and mounted on a snake wood shaft with horn ferrule. The 4" wide and 2 1/4" high handle has a characteristically full design. It bears German hallmarks on the collar and is in good condition. Overall length 36". Estimate $900 -$ 1.100.

 

24-A decorative and large, 3" wide and 2 3/4" high, English, ebony handle from the late 19th century well carved, with Ñschnauzer" head with two colored glass eyes and mounted on a black ebony shaft with silver collar with hallmarks and horn ferrule. Overall length 37 3/4". Estimate $500- $600.

 

25-A decorative English cane from the 19th century with 5" wide stag horn handle well carved on the front with a dog head on its ebonized wood shaft with plain silver collar and bronze ferrule. The whole cane is in good original condition. Overall length 34".

26-A very good English ivory handle from the 19th century well carved with a portrait of a Victorian man face wearing a hat on his head and a scarf around his neck. The handle has a very beautiful smooth and luminous surface. It is in top condition mounted on a satin wood shaft with stag horn ferrule. Overall length 33". Estimate $800 - $1.000.

 

27-A good and early German sword cane from the second half of the 19th century with 2" turned and faceted black horn knob on its real full bark red malacca shaft with white metal collar and iron ferrule. In the cane there is a 25 1/2" long rhomb shaped forged and plain cut steel blade. Its surface has a decorative easy removable superficial oxidization which adds to the charm of the cane and matches perfectly to the aged walking stick. The quality cane is in fine original condition with a good and warm patina and the old leather loop of the period. Overall length 35 3/4". Estimate $800 -$1.000.

 

28-A good French 12mm, breech loading, central fire, cartridge gun cane from the 19th century, from Manufrance in completely original condition and perfect full function. The attractive brown-green 3 3/4" wide and 2 1/4" high "L" shaped plain horn handle has the release button on its lower rim over the white metal collar. The cartridge chamber with half-moon extractor bears manufacturing stamp on one side. The steel shaft is covered with a natural yellow stopped malacca with removable metal ferrule. For similar pieces see Catherine Dike, Cane Curiosa, chapter 33, Breech-loading firearms, pages 339-346. Overall length 35 1/2".

29-A good and early German sword cane from the second half of the 18th century with 5" high ivory knob on its real full bark red malacca shaft with bronze cap, white metal collar and iron ferrule. In the cane there is a 25 1/2" long rhomb shaped forged and plain cut steal blade with traces of gilding and bluing. Its surface has a decorative easy removable superficial oxidization which adds to the charm of the cane and matches perfectly to the aged walking stick. The quality cane is in top original condition with good and warm patina, it can be opened only when the pin on the leather loop is removed from the shaft. Overall length 38 1/2".

Estimate $900 - $1.100.

 

30-A good Chinese export cloisonne enamel handle from the 19th century mounted on an ebony shaft with horn ferrule. The side of the 9 1/2" high handle is decorated with a colored dragon on a turquoise ground, its top with flowers and leaves; it is extremely decorative and in excellent condition. Overall length 36".

Estimate $600 - $800.

 

31-An outstanding Art Nouveau German knob from the turn of the century mounted on a well spotted snake wood shaft with horn ferrule. The 1 3/4" high silver knob is superbly modeled in the shape of a panther head with long moustache, wide opened mouth and ivory teeth. It bears German hallmarks on the collar, has a very strong design and is in superb condition. Overall length 36 1/2".

Estimate $1.100 - $1.300.

 

32-A Viennese handle from the late 19th century with rare motif made of a 2" high gilt chick with garnet eyes on a 2 3/4" high short shaft of real tortoiseshell and mounted on a black ebony shaft with horn ferrule. The handle has its original red leather box with retailer hallmark. Overall length 38 1/2".

Estimate $700 - $900.

 

33-A large and decorative Art Nouveau silver opera handle, 5 1/4" wide, from the turn of the century decorated on both sides with stylized flowers and mounted on an ebony shaft with horn ferrule. The handle bears German 925 sterling silver hallmarks and is in mint condition. Overall length 36 1/2". Estimate $500 -$600.

 

34-An early English cane from the period around 1750 with 3" high fire gilt knob on its beautiful blond real full bark malacca shaft with eyelets and bronze ferrule, three classical figures in repousse one of them with the sitting ÑBritannia" framed with heavy scrolls, cartouches and decorations. The rare cane, which is in best original condition, is a very fine example of the taste of the 18th century. Overall length 40 1/4". Estimate $1.200 - $1.500.

 

35-A decorative English cane from the 19th century with 5 1/2" wide ivory handle carved from a tip of an elephant tusk with a lion head on its ebony shaft with 1 1/2" plain silver collar and bronze ferrule. The face of the lion has strong character and is framed by a thick mane. The whole cane with nice patina is in excellent original condition. Overall length 36 3/4". Estimate $800 - $1.000.

 

36-A beautifully carved Japanese 4" high ivory handle from the 19th century mounted on a rosewood shaft with metal collar and horn ferrule. It depicts a screaming monkey on a rock being pinched by a crab in his left paw. The design of the handle and its carving are from a great master hand, it is in choice condition with warm patina. Overall length 34 3/4". Estimate $900 -$1.200.

 

37-A decorative 3 1/2" high, large Chinese export silver knob from the 19th century well designed and fine detailed chased with a scaled dragon with large head and big mouth. The inscription on the top is "Fu" which means luck, intelligence or good sense. The top is in extremely fine condition and mounted on a rosewood shaft with horn ferrule. Overall length 38 3/4".

38-An 8 1/2" long ivory Japanese handle from the 19th century naturalistically carved in the shape of a bamboo and mounted on a black ebony shaft with stag horn ferrule. It is in good condition with a smooth and luminous surface with some age cracks. Overall length 36 1/4". Estimate $600 - $900.

 

39-An interesting Japanese bamboo cane from the 19th century carved all over in low relief with forty-six framed and dark stained miniature botanical pictures. The 44 1/2" long cane is in perfect original condition and is a masterpiece of its kind.

Estimate $600 - $800.

 

40-A rare and decorative 8" high English handle from the 19th century with abalone veneer and a gilt chased knob and collar. The abalone handle has a beautiful changing and luminous color between blue, green, yellow and light brown and is mounted on a makassar ebony shaft with horn ferrule. Overall length 37".

Estimate $700 -$900.

 

41-A precious Victorian Lapis Lazuli ball and enamel knob from the 19th century mounted on a well spotted snake wood shaft with horn ferrule. The ball is of the finest deep blue quality. Its collar is engine turned and transparent white enameled. Overall length 37". Estimate $700 -$800.

 

42-A unique American presentation system cane from the 19th century related to the history of the railway. The white metal knob with two engraved trains framed by rich foliage unscrews to reveal a 3 1/2" wide concealed square key. The 2 1/4" high knob has its original ebony shaft with bronze ferrule. According to the previous owner the cane was first used for the inauguration of an important line around 1860 and its key opened the door of the first wagon to the public. The cane, with extensive use marks on the knob, is in excellent original condition. Overall length 29 1/2".

43-An interesting English system cane from the end of the 19th century with a collapsible saw, where the blade hooks on a heavy metal piece at the tip of the handle. When stored in its slot inside the shaft, it swivels to protect the teeth. A small sliding plate engraved with the inventorís name Holzapfel & Co, London keeps it in place. For similar pieces see Catherine Dike, Cane Curiosa, page 251. 25/27. The cane is in original condition. Overall length 37 3/4". Estimate $700 - $800.

 

44-A decorative German sword cane from the 19th century with elegant "L" shaped Siam blond horn handle, 4 1/2" high and 3 1/4" wide, carved with a horse leg on its bamboo shaft with bronze ferrule. Its hoof is inlayed on the inside with nailed ivory. In the cane there is a plain forged steel dagger, 11 1/2" long, with perfectly working locking mechanism and release knob in the bronze turned collar. The whole cane is in good original condition with nice warm patina. Overall length 34 1/2".

45-A good and early French cane from the first half of the 19th century with a fan. The silver plated knob over the real full bark red malacca shaft with horn ferrule opens to reveal a folded deep blue removable silk fan with a silver plated handle. The whole rare system cane is in perfect original condition with beautiful patina. For similar pieces see Catherine Dike, Cane Curiosa, page 185. Overall length 38 3/4". Estimate $1.000 - $1.300.

 

46-A pencil, pen and ink pot cane, with stanhope handle. The 1" white metal handle unscrews to reveal a corked ink pot. It also contains a stanhope with 4 photographs and it is inscribed "Souvenir of Port Said", the port at the north end of the Suez Canal, Egypt. The cane unscrews 11" down to reveal a lead pencil holder and 22" down to reveal a pen. The hardwood shaft is stain decorated with a 1" metal ferrule. The condition is very good. (There is an example of this cane without stanhope on page 157, 14-6 of Cane Curiosa by Dike. It is probably English, CA 1900. Overall length 34 1/4". Estimate $1.300 - $1.500.

 

47-An English solid silver snuff box system stick, with a hinged circular cover decorated with a crossed rope de-sign and engraved with the monogram "RG". The ebonized shaft is joined to a 1 1/2" silver ferrule. Overall length 34 1/4". Estimate $900 - $1.200.

 

48-A late 19th century Austrian flask cane. The brass cap unscrews to reveal a 10 1/4" corked glass flask. Original steel ferrule. Overall length 36". Estimate $700 - $800.

 

49-An early 20th century flashlight cane, probably English, made for use in hailing hansom cabs. Perfect working condition. One-piece wood shaft with crook handle. All parts original. Overall length 35". Estimate $450 - $550.

 

50-A very fine late 19th century/early 20th century Continental tripod cane with a faux stepped malacca shaft and crook handle housing steel legs which extend to several different settings through the use of early spring- release buttons. White metal collar and matching stepped spike ferrule. Al1 parts of this intricate mechanism are original and in perfect working order. A rare systems piece. Overall length 34 3/4". Estimate $1.500 - $1.700.

 

51-An Austrian combination pipe and cheroot cane from the late 19th century. The two-toned burl grip unscrews to reveal a compartment having a bowl as well as a dual -purpose pipe stem and cigarette holder with original ivory mouthpiece. Original shaft and two-metal ferrule. Overall length 33 3/4". Estimate $700 - $900.

 

52-A very important and one-of-a-kind early 19th century American folk art cane, having a tau handle and with the entire Lordís prayer spiraling down the dark cherry shaft in elegant block letters in medium to high relief. Pristine condition. The remarkable achievement of master cane carver. Overall length 35 1/4". Estimate $3.000 - $3.500.

 

53-A wonderfully whim- sical mid-19th century walking stick, with a charming horse's head with two-color glass eyes and flowing mane cut into the outfacing side of a 4 1/2" bone tau handle. Sterling collar, half-bark malacca shaft and original metal ferrule. Most likely of American origin. Overall length 34 1/2".

Estimate $650 - $750.

 

54-A 19th century Maine- carved American folk art walking cane with a modified crook handle carved in the image of an eagle head complete with black and gold painted pearl eyes and red tongue. Red painted collar. Great crackled surface. Overall length 35". Estimate $800 - $900.

 

55-An extremely stout and heavy rosewood Masonic cane with a silver Compass on the Square with "G" on the top of the straight up grip handle. This cane has a brightly silver plated 7 1/2" ferrule. Late 19th century, probably American, and with a most appealing, simple elegance. Excellent condition. Overall length 36".

Estimate $600 - $800.

 

56-A very well conceived and executed one-piece American folk art walking cane of Diamond Wil-low, arrestingly carved with a snake grabbing in its mouth the hind legs of a fleeing frog. Both creatures have nail eyes, and their original polychrome green bodies and red mouths. The open willow pods are painted chocolate brown, while the finish of the remainder of the cane, including the knob grip, is a beautiful butterscotch. Frog 3 1/2" long, snake 21 1/4" long. Overall length 33". Estimate $1.600 - $2.000.

 

57-A carved caricature stick from the 19th century. An accentuated nose on this remarkable face perhaps connotes a religious or ethnic bias. Attractively blackened and stained shaft. Original eyelet holes. 2" brass ferrule. Overall length 33 1/2".

58-A rare and very early Spanish Vara, also known as a "Governor's Stick". Dating to the Spanish Colonial period in South America, these canes were given by the central government in Madrid to the administrators throughout the provinces of South America in the period of Spanish domination (1500-1800 A.D). The shafts were made of Laurel wood, and the varas were traditionally covered with plata (silver), as here. Long ferrules (often, as in this case, bayonet points) were not uncommon. The Governor's Stick was the Spanish Colonial equivalent of the "Scepter of State", and virtually empowered the provincial administrator to act on behalf of the central government back in Spain. Overall length 34". Estimate $1.200 - $1.500.

 

59-A very unusual 19th century reptile folk art cane, of swamp beech, probably from the "Jacksonville (Fla.) School" of black carvers. Nearly always, these canes feature an alligator on the handle. But the lizard, no less a black carver's symbol than the alligator, is much more seldom seen, probably because most handles are longer and require a creature of greater length, while this handle most likely was short to begin with. Original brass ferrule. Beautiful condition. Overall length 33 3/4".

60-An elegant Cartier dress cane from the turn of the century, the crook handle and shaft of one piece of full-bark spotted blond malacca. A gold end cap is marked with Cartier's inventory number and "14K". On the outfacing side of the cane, and staggered from top to bottom, left to right, are the initials "JAH". The word CARTIER is engraved into the outfacing side of the shaft. Original light brown horn ferrule. All parts original. A jewel. Overall length 36". Estimate $1.300 - $1.500.

 

61-A crook-handled presentation cane, the curved handle of two-toned horn with a 1 1/2" collar of finely worked silver with hallmarks, engraved: Presented to J. T. Bassell by his fellow officials at Exhall Colliery after 28 Years of Service Jan 1 1924. The richly toned malacca shaft has its original brass and steel ferrule. Overall length 35 2/3". Estimate $400 - $500.

 

62-An exquisite Continental dress cane, probably French late 19th century, having a turned ivory and baleen 2 3/4" grip. The remarkably intricate shaft is comprised of an upper section of rich, dark cherry, with baleen disks and inlaid ivory. Below the inlay work is parquetry of lengthwise strip design, consisting of alternating slender strips of dark cherry and blond toned maple with baleen top and bottom collars. The cane also has the original three-part woven silk tassels. There is an ivory top cap to be straight grip surmounted by and ivory ring collar tapering to the shaft with twin baleen separators. Rounded ivory ferrule. Altogether a unique piece in beautiful condition. Overall length 35 1/2". Estimate $1.750 - $1.950.

 

63-A rare and very important early 19th century commemorative cane. A straight up grip handle of stag's horn is joined to the wooden shaft by a narrow silver collar with silver eyelets. Inscribed on 3 separate silver plaques on a wooden hexagonal raised portion of this otherwise cylindrical cane: "Comme- morating O. H. Perry's Victory Lake Erie Sept. 10, 1813" "We have met the enemy and they are ours." "Taken from the flagship Lawrence March 5, 1838". Silver collar and original brass and steel two-metal ferrule. Overall length 35 1/2".

Estimate $1.300 - $1.500.

 

64-A very important American folk art walking stick, with one-piece 4 1/2" "L" handle. Varnished, four-color (red, black, green and brown) polychromed wood, probably maple, with a brass handle end cap. Dated 1893. signed "VR" (Victoria Regina) near the handle. Also etched and painted are a crown, leaves, songbirds with painted glass eyes, a butterfly and a snake, all against a background of blackened notch marks. Original brass ferrule. 65-An outstanding and early French cane from the second half of the 18th century with ivory handle on its real full bark malacca shaft with eyelets, tassel, and long horn ferrule. The 4 3/4" wide and 3 3/4" high handle is inspired from the antique mythology and from a great master hand who designed and delicately carved the handle with a mermaid and two dolphins. The stylized animals each under one arm of the smiling mermaid have their heads with big eyes on the front of the handle, their tails are crossed on the back against her long hair. The ivory has an attractive luminous surface with smooth patina and ebony inlay in the collar. The whole cane is in superb condition. Overall length 38 1/2". Estimate $4.000 - $5.500.

 

66-A decorative and rare German ìKPMî large porcelain handle from the 19th century, 5" wide and 3 3/4" high, in curved early baroque shape with a ladyís face on the front. The handle is mainly decorated with gold lines with a few colored flowers on the back. It has a decent charm, its beautiful original red colored full bark malacca shaft with gilt collar and horn ferrule. It is in perfect condition. This handle was first modeled by Friedrich Elias Meyer in the second half of the 18th century for the world famous King Porcelain Manufacture, KPM, in Berlin and was produced over 150 years in various sizes and qualities. Under the monogram NY, from top to bottom, there is a beautiful collar of laurels and leaves, various agriculture utensils and tools, two tobacco plants framed with a rope with tassel and the heart of the owner with two leaves. The lower part of the cane is decorated with two belts and various engraved patterns again under the same collar of laurels and leaves. The whole cane, which has a great historical value and comes from a private collection where it was for the last 40 years, is in choice original condition with a superb patina. 95-An important American Folk Art cane from the 19th century from Virginia also related to the history of the tobacco agriculture. The cane is made in two parts with an ìLî shaped 4 3/4" wide handle ending on the front in a stylized horse head (one part is missing) and with an engraved monogram ìBî on the back. Its shaft is carved all over and has an iron ferrule. Between the tobacco plants there is on one side a coat of arms and on the other the peasant with a big harvest knife in the hand. Over him there is a carved tobacco grater framed by a knotted ribbon with the rest of an inscription and under him there is a child between domestic animals. The whole willow wood cane with many black knots has an attractive dark, old patina and is in good original condition. It has an interesting historical value and comes from the same collection as the previous number where it was for the last 40 years. Overall length 30 1/2". Estimate $ 3.000 - $ 4.000.

 

96-An early American Folk Art cane from the first half of the 19th century of impressive large size carved from one single branch of oak with iron ferrule. The 10" wide handle is in the shape of a stylized whale swallowing an eagle which bites a birdís head on the neck, which, in its turn, holds in its beak two old menís heads. Near the whale there is a snake with a sheepís head in her mouth. The whole scene could have a mythological inspiration. The unique cane is in good original condition with a dark warm patina. 97-Viking Cane, c. 1000 A.D. A unique carved oak museum piece with a "totem-like" array of bearded Nordic faces about nine each in five adjacent columns running from top of the cane nearly half way down the shank. The cane has some deep age cracks which do not weaken the tensil strength of the cane nor do they detract from the esthetics of this marvelous old "walking stick." It is interesting to contemplate whether the cane was originally carved in Denmark or was simply a nice oak branch taken on an ocean voyage and carved on the way before it was ultimately entombed in the permafrost of Greenland where it was found a few years ago. 123-A very rare and highly collectible military officer's version of a head master's or defense stick. This example, like those more commonly seen, is constructed of leather disks stacked on a central metal core rod. This particular piece has staggered light-colored separators, as well as its handsome 2 2/3" original brass ferrule. The paper shaft is surmounted by the cane's most distinguishing feature, a 1 7/8"-diameter flat knob grip onto which a photo transfer of the military officer (for whom presumably this cane was made and to whom it belonged), in full dress uniform, has been inset and then covered with a clear lacquer surface -- a process accomplished at the time of the cane's creation. This is the paradigmatic example of all defense sticks. Overall length 35 1/2". Estimate $1.200 - $1.500.

Its ìLî shaped 4" wide and 10 1/4" high handle with attractive dark varnish is carved with a crocodile over a manís head. The handle continues down first with a collar engraved with monogram OP and the year 1893 and then in a twisted carved shaft of lighter color. The cane is in a superb condition with a immaculate surface. Its origin is uncertain, it could be American or have been brought earlier to this country. 136-An English horse measure cane from the 19th century all made from one piece of pepper bamboo with the root as knob with plain silver collar engraved ìCAPTn E. PALEY 5th LANCERSî and brass ferrule. The box wood square horse measure withdraws with a straight pull and is calibrated in feets and inches on one side and inches and hands on the other. It has a 15" brass concealing lever for the horse shoulder which can be opened at 90 degrees. The cane is in good original and working condition, the bubble level in the brass lever is missing. Overall length 37".

Its exceptional shaft is one single piece of well twisted narwhal tusk with natural deep grooves. The whole cane is in excellent original condition with decent patina. It is interesting to note that narwhal canes and staffs were always extremely rare; by tradition they were reserved to members of royal families and the highest aristocracy. Overall length 38 3/4". 142-A superb French Art Deco cane from the turn of the century with mushroom shaped gemset, guilloche enamel, rock crystal and tortoiseshell knob on a beautiful coconut wood shaft with white metal ferrule. The frosted rock crystal top of the 4 1/4" high knob is inset with a large whiskey colored faceted topaz and framed by a 1 3/4" platinum ring set with square blue sapphires. Its base is a 2 3/4" high blond tortoiseshell plinth with engine turned and blue enameled collar with two rose diamonds platinum rings. The outstanding cane, in the style of Rene Lalique, is a beauty and a great specimen of the turn of the century aesthetic. It is in perfect original condition. According to the previous owner the cane was in the 1960ís the property of Salvador Dali and was one of his favorites of his countless walking sticks. Overall length 38". 152-A strong early-to-mid-19th century American folk art cane, with a wonderful 6 1/2" alligator staring ahead, gape-jawed. The the tau handle is on a separate thick blond wood shaft, the top 14 1/2" of which is cut into geometric designs and carries several animal carvings in high relief, including two birds, eight deer and a dog. The stepped down, lower 22 3/4" of the shaft is carved with three birds, with traces of polychrome paint. A wonderful piece of Americana and American animal life. Overall length 38". The 5 3/4" high handle is engraved with a ball over four up going stylized palm leaves. It has a turned collar with groove and a painted monogram PH on the top. The shaft is carved with two similar twisted snakes between knobs and their plain bodies are nicely painted with regular scales. The artist stained on porpoise parts of the cane with a dark brown color to underline the snakes and increase the relief effect. The cane is in superb original condition. When the cane is swung, centrifugal force allows a plain 8" long steel blade to snap out and lock through the white metal trap door on the top of the cane. By pressing the two steel bands on the bladeís lower part, the mechanism is unlocked and it can be returned to its chamber. The inconspicuous cane is in good original condition. Overall length 34". 175-A curious American cattle farmer cane from the 19th century of unusual large size made of one single branch with a 4" bulbous knob with snuff box. The huge knob is inset with the nail of a bison claw which was fashioned with an opening bras trap. The whole cane is in good original condition with an amber colored patina and bras ferrule. 176-A decorative Japanese sword cane from the 19th century made of a rare bamboo of oval section with 22" polished root as a handle. The carved cane unscrews to show a 24" long, plain forged, steel blade, partly decorated with fine engraving. It is in good condition with age cracks on the shaft with bronze ferrule. 177-A one-of a-kind whip made of a crocodile tail with a 7 1/2" high handle carved in the natural shape of a crocodile on a plain 27 1/2" long whip. The whip belonged in the 19th century to an American land owner of New Orleans who gave it as a present to a film producer in Los Angeles in the thirties.

179-An important American Folk Art Cane from the middle of the 19th century well carved with two cages among polychrome, totem like, geometrical decoration. In each of the cages there is a small ball delicately cut from the same wood. The design of the walnut wood cane and its colors are very similar to Indian Native Art. Further research could clear its origin. It is in complete original condition with age traces on the wood. The missing top was never replaced to keep its full authenticity. 192-A WWI American soldier's stick, carved of one piece of wood in a cylindrical shape. The top 5 3/4" left uncarved as a straight grip handle with eyelets and holes. The remaining 28 5/8" is completely carved with oak leaves and branches in high relief, set against a stippled background, all of which is surmounted by the date "1918", also in relief. Excellent condition. Overall length 34 1/4". Estimate $1,200 - $1,400.

 

193-A wonderful mid-19th century folk art cane, carved from a bough, the 4 3/4" L handle cut into an eagle's head with original and very early two-color glass eyes. This piece is a product of the Virginia "Tobacco School" of cane carvers, as evidenced by the many tobacco leaves carved down the length of the shaft. A "two-toned" quality to the finish was achieved by virtue of the stain which was applied to the entire piece but which "took" differently to the different sections of the bough. Further enhancing this specimen is the carving of rams' horns and ears above and about each twig spur, creating the visual impression of "mounted trophies". Excellent condition. Overall length 36".

197-A fine whaler's cane, consisting of a slender whalebone shaft and decorated silver collar, surmounted by a ringed 2" whale bone knob grip featuring a floating collar original to the whale bone. 198-An important early 19th century whaleman's "Going Ashore" stick with knob handle and silver collar engraved "Capt. Snow", who was the Massachusetts Bay whaling captain to whom this cane belonged. 205-A rare French Roue's cane, with a beautiful 1 5/8" - diameter enameled ball grip of violet, purple, pale green and gold, with gilt collar, ebonized shaft and brass ferrule. All parts original. 206-An engineer's system stick, with a tapering cylindrical ivory grip handle, the top of which is inlaid with a Victoria head silver coin. The handle unscrews to reveal a hidden compartment with measuring stick, ivory-handled ink pen and mechanical pencil. The side of the handle is one continuous Oriental- carved panel tableaux with four human figures, trees and temples, and with a "floating" cartouche, left blank. A 1/2" silver collar with hallmarks is joined to a fruit wood shaft. Ivory ferrule. Overall length 341/2". Estimate $1.100 - $1.300.

 

207-1934 Detroit Tigers American League Champions pennant cane. Chrome plaited steel cane with wooden knob handle. When handle is pulled out, attached to brass rod is 1934 Detroit Tigers American League Champions pennant. In bright orange and like new is picture of leaping tiger and the names and positions of the starting team. CF WHITE, C COCKRANE, 2B GEHRINGER, 1B GREENBERG, 3B OWEN, LF GOSLIN, SS ROGELL, RF FOX, P ROWE. Probably a promotional give-away item. Manufactured by J.A.B. Specialities in Detroit. Pennant is 22.5" in length, cane is 36"; small dent with some slight oxidation to chrome. Rare!

208-A charming English cherry wood cane from the 19th century consisting of a wood handle carved in the form of a horse's hoof with an ivory plate on the bottom of the hoof attached by tacks. A worn hall-marked silver collar is below the piercing from which a leather tie still sits. Overall length 36". Estimate $750 - $850.

 

209-A rare French mid-nineteenth century geologist's cane. The iron handle is cast in the form of a pick-hammer of the shape typical for chipping samples off of larger rock outcroppings. A silver collar sits below the handle on an original ebonized staff with thick rubber ferrule (to avoid slipping off of rocks). Overall length 31". Estimate $750 - $1.000.

 

210-A rare 18th century English tailor's ''ell stick" with inlaid bands of copper markers for measuring widths of cloth. A small tapered handle makes the cherry wood tool into a cane as well. Overall length 33". Estimate $400 - $500.

 

211-England, l9th century cadet's swagger stick. The pommel-shaped handle has a raised English coat-of-arms surmounted with a crown and legend ARMY CADET CORPS, around central lion. The bendable staff is of cherry wood tipped with silver ferrule. Overall length 27". Estimate $200 - $250.

 

212-A "hiker's cane" from Switzerland from the turn of the century. This lovely example has eight embossed and engraved silver plaques representing different Swiss inns and mountain resorts. The ferrule appears to be made of pewter. Overall length 35". Estimate $200 - $300.
