The "Bacchius the Jew" referred to in this coin is one of the enigmas of Jewish numismatics. The obverse of Cybele clearly relates to the Ludi Megalenses, a festival under the direction of the curule aediles, in which capacity A. Plautius was responsible for this issue. The intriguing reverse refers to the surrender of some potentate during Pompey's eastern campaigns, possible that of Aristobulus the High Priest following the fall of Jerusalem in 63 B.C.

A truly remarkable coin depicting this famous Gaulish chief. This type refers to the defeat and capture of this formidable leader by Caesar. This coin provides us with the only known portrait of an ancient Gaul. The reverse shows a typical Gaulish chariot; only among Celtic tribes was the chariot still in use at that time.

Ancient Coin Collection with Reference Books Included

569. A scholarly collection of 240+ coins. This collection was assembled over a period of 10 years by an individual who took the time to carefully assemble it in museum fashion. The collection is displayed in eleven small black cases. Each coin is set in its own clear plastic padded container. Every coin has been attributed and every box has a typed information card inserted on the inside cover. Each coin is charted with a number that corresponds to the reference card making it quite easy to use. The coins are mostly bronze but there are some in silver. Roman, Greek and Byzantine coins are the central focus of the collection. Roman sestertii are numerous; many quite nice. The collection includes a nice silver tetradrachm of Alexander the Great, a silver stater from Aspendus, a nice hemidrachm of Philip II, a replica Athenian tetradrachm as well as a few Roman silver denarii and many other nice quality and attractive ancient coins. Coins are mostly fine to fine plus, some better some worse. As a bonus we've added several good reference books. They include the David Sear books, Greek Coins and Their Values, Vols. 1 & 2, 1978, 1979; Greek Imperial Coins, 1982; Byzantine Coins and Their Values, 1987; Zander Klawans, Handbook of Ancient Greek and Roman Coins, 1995; K. A collection of mostly small ancient Roman bronze antiquities all dating from 1st-3rd century A.D. All nicely packaged into 6 separate display boxes with magnet locking covers. 571. Abafil four tray coin box. New! Four trays each with crushed red velvet lining. Each tray has 24, 2" x 2" coin slots or 96 total. Set in lockable suit case. $150

572. A large custom built wooden coin cabinet. Beautifully hand-crafted in mahogany, the cabinet is divided into four sections. Each of the four sections has 28 slide out trays with two double sized trays at bottom (112 trays plus 8 double trays). Each of the 112 trays has 30 coin slots measuring 2" x 2". Also included are two double drawers at bottom of each section, without dividers. That's 3360 divided coin slots plus the 8 double drawers. Four sections are locked by two double sets of lockable doors. Cabinet is in excellent condition. Measuring 55" high x 18" deep x 56 3/4" wide . $1,500up
