4. Alaska, Eskimo, ca. 1900-1920. A walrus tusk cribbage board, scrimshawed on all four plane surfaces with remarkably well done Arctic scenes, including walruses on ice floes, a procession of quail, etc. Finely preserved but missing pegs. L: 24.5". $1200
5. Alaska, Eskimo, ca. 1950-1960. A "Billiken" Award; from Elmendorf AFB Theater Guild. A sperm whale tooth carved in the humorous form of a Billiken, which was awarded in 1961, to James C. Hancock for the "Caine Mutiny Court Martial." Height of tooth atop wood base: 6". $550
6. Alaska, Eskimo, ca. 1950-1960. Another similar Biliken award, to the same actor in 1962, for Best Actor, in "Death of a Salesman." Height of tooth atop wood base: 5.5". $550
7. Eskimo, antique and contemporary. A group of bone and ivory carvings of earrings and buttons, etc. The lot includes several interesting items, including: a facing walrus head, a stylized face, a fish, two masks, and a pelican head. 8. Alaska, Eskimo, contemporary walrus ivory carving of a polar bear standing upright, atop an ivory slab. H: 5". Nice. $150
9. Alaska, Eskimo, contemporary cribbage board, but this smaller and on legs, and complete with pegs. The walrus tusk board with a single husky, and the peg area with scrimmed patterning. At wide end, a lid conceals pegs in a small chamber within the tusk. L: 13.75". $550
10. Alaska, Eskimo, late 19th - early 20th century. Scrimshawed walrus tusk. The broad tusk worked on both sides with flora and fauna of the Arctic region. On top are four panels with a bear, two hares, and the front and back sides of a beaver. The bottom with an elaborate scene of caribou and moose among low trees and hills. A choice late 19th century work. L: 18.5". $2000
11. Alaska, Eskimo-style. Mask of small size in dark-stained soft pine wood. A bold, stylized male face with jutting nose and open mouth. Almond-shaped eyes in copper sheet with dot border. Eyebrows, mustache and goatee, and hair comprised of rabbit fur. H: 9.5". Cute. $175
12. Alaska, Inuit or Bering Straits, Prehistoric to more recent antique times. A very nice little group of objects in bone and walrus ivory. Four are nesting or swimming geese, pierced at tail for stringing, with two having additional pierced dot decoration on back. Other items include four net or line weights, and a harpoon barb. In stone, five flaked fish hooks, and two animal amulets in stone (marble and clear felspar) said to be found with this material but look to be more of Pre-Columbian Bolivia or Ecuador origin, plus and old Zuni bone animal fetish. L: 1.1" - 2.25". $500/lot
13. Alaska, Inuit or Bering Straits, Prehistoric. Good-sized head from what would have been a substantial figure in heavily fossilized whale bone of walrus ivory. Face strongly stylized and ovoid in shape, with high cheekbones and pointed chin suggestive of being bearded. Well weathered but features clear. With dark tan, almost caramel colored patina. H: 1.1". Rare in this size! $1000up.
14. Alaska, St. Lawrence Island, 19th century or earlier. Sazoonga tribe. Harpoon head carved of walrus ivory, with notched tip (for metal blade), and pierced transversely and partially lengthwise at back. The whole resembling a stylized animal head. Finely preserved with good deep patina. L: 3.75"; mounted in framed shadowbox. Very attractive.

15. Alaska, St. Lawrence Island, Eskimo, Prehistoric Era. A cleaned ivory toggle of whale form. The whale’s tail flukes form a closed loop with the whale’s back to create the toggle hole. The piece was originally covered with a black pitch-like film which was nicely cleaned by the former owner, leaving a nice mottled brown patina. L:2.5". Ex P. Klicka Collection. $1000
16. Eskimo, St. Lawrence Island, A prehistoric ivory concave lid with etched designs in arrow shape. The two small tie holes indicate its use as a cover. Lovely patina. L: 9.5 cm. $100
17. American Scrimshaw, ca. 1871. An American whaler’s carved and scrimmed spoon, likely of sperm whale ivory. Engraved on handle, "BABY." Within spoon’s bowl. a mermaid with gull; on bottom, a finely designed whale with the handle inscription: "TO MY SON WITH LOVE, 1871." Nicely patinated. L: 4.5". $400
18. American Scrimshaw, a choice contemporary sperm whale tooth with a nicely rendered scene featuring a man’s portrait with ship’s rigging behind. The mustached man resembles a youthful Ernest Hemingway. Work signed: "KLK." H: 5.75". $600

19. (Naval Document) An American Ship Master's Association License, dated Jan. 12, 1866, and awarded to Henry J. Sleeker to be a ship's master. An impressive document with five naval vignettes, six official signatures, handsomely matted and framed. Inside dimensions: 13" x 10". $400

20. Arkansas. An early aboriginal celt tomahawk set into original wood haft. The oblong stone celt is secured by leather thong covered with hardened pitch. Overall L: 27.5"; celt L: 5". Cf. Petersen no. 11, there attributed to an Arkansas site, ca. 1700. $200
21. California, Chumash Indians. Lot of two small steatite fetishes: one carved as a whale, the other as a kneeling woman. L: 20-48mm. Ex Korda Collection. $350/2
22. Canada, Inuit, early 20th century. A headdress frame in carved antler and walrus or whale bone, perhaps for a roach-like construction like those seen on the Woodland Tribes. Piece pirifom-shaped, with openwork designs, some engraving, and drilled holes along edge. Attached at one end a short tube of antler, presumably to hold feathers. L: 6"; with leather thong. $150
Colonial Spanish America
23. Cavalry sword with brass swept hilt. Blade straight double edge, 28.5", with broad fuller both sides. Inscribed "...Por Mi Rey" (...for my king). No scabbard. A genuine 18th century or earlier example. $300
Pre-Columbian Art
24. Ecuador, Esmaraldas, Tumaco or Jama Coaque, ca. 300 BC - 300 AD. Attractive figurine of standing female cupping her breasts. She wears long skirt, elaborate and tall head wrapping, plus jewelry: labret, nose and earrings, and heavy pendant necklace. Sharply molded and well preserved, with much red and ochre paint remaining. H: 4.8"; on black stand. Nice. $350
25. Ecuador, Manabi, Manabi Coast, ca. 200-500 AD. A very interesting hard ceramic stamp seal, the handle shaped as a god’s body out of which emanates a serpent’s head. Seal base with gridiron design. A most interesting piece. Cf. Saville, Antiquities of the Manabi, pl. L, no. 9. $150
A collection of antique copies of very rare hand made American "peace medals" distributed to native chiefs. Most if not all of the following medals were made in the 19th century.
26. George Washington Peace Medal (replica) Indian Peace Medal, dated 1792. In foreground, to the right, stands the uniformed figure of George Washington. He reaches out right hand to receive a smoking peace pipe from the feather-clad Indian on the left. The Indian stands next to a tree, his discarded tomahawk at his foot. Behind the Indian, an evergreen tree with four branches, while in the background a farmer with a team of oxen plows near his homestead. Legend in two lines: "George Washington, President 1792." Reverse of medal inscribed with the Great Seal of the Unite States -- an heraldic American eagle: wings raised, shield breast, "E Pluribus Unum" ribbon in mouth, and holding arrows and laurel branch. Looped heavy frame surrounding engraved plate. Size: 99 x 65 mm. $400up
27. George Washington Peace Medal (replica) Another example as previous, but an earlier copy, of monumental size and dated at 1793. Around plate, a thick rounded rim with heart-shaped loop at top. Size: 6.6" x 4.75". Cf. Prucha, p. 80, no. 27. $1500up
28. George Washington Peace Medal (later replica) A similar 1793 oval medal except this one is much smaller. There is a dark tarnish on the periphery of both sides. The Indian has a six feathered headdress. Reverse also with the Great Seal of the United States. H: 4" x 2.65" $400
29. George Washington Peace Medal (later replica) Another medal as preceding, also 1793. The Indian’s headdress with five feathers, and he wears arm bands and oval peace medal around neck. Medal’s reverse same as previous two. With looped frame around, and strung with a strand of red trade beads. Size: 83 x 60 mm. Looks as if piece is a casting, but in fine style. $350
30. Obverse with legend: "G. WASHINGTON PRESIDENT," around top, and "1789" below in exergue. A full length figure of an Indian, with feathered bonnet and wrapped in a blanket, stands on plowed ground as he casts aside his tomahawk. The Indian extends out his hand holding a peace pipe to an armed, allegorical female figure symbolizing the United States. She is depicted like the Roman Minerva. She reaches forward to the pipe proffered by the Indian. Her shield, engraved with Medusa’s face, occupies the ground between her and the Indian. Reverse of medal inscribed with the Great Seal of the Unite States -- an heraldic American eagle: wings raised, shield breast, "E Pluribus Unum" ribbon in mouth, and holding arrows and laurel branch. Across the top of the field: "THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA." Size: 104 x 80 mm. $1000up
31. George Washington Peace Medal (later replica) This and the following two silver oval peace medals are of the same 1789 type, but each of slightly different style. 89 x 67 mm. Again, each is set into looped frame such as is seen in the previous examples. $200-300

35. Peace and Friendship medal oval, reverse like previous examples, dated 1797. Obv. with clasped Indian and white man hands above, crossed peace-pipe and tomahawk pipe. "PEACE AND FRIENDSHIP" interspersed among images. Oval. 115 x 76 mm.. Nice! $350up
36. Treaty of Greenville oval medal dated August 3, 1795. A very elaborately engraved border surrounds the medal on both sides. 106 x 78 mm. Beautifully toned and attached to a strand of turquoise nuggets and shell disc beads. Each side engraved with American eagle with nimbus and ribbon bearing E PLURIBUS UNUM. A beautiful OLD piece and conceivably an authentic one. $1000up
37. Treaty of Greenville Peace Medal (replica) Silver medal for the "Treaty of Greenville," dated 3rd of August, 1775. An oval plate of silver, holed for suspension, and engraved on both sides. Large corroded hole in center. $150
38. James Madison, a small 1809 silver peace medal with Pipe tomahawk and peace pipe crossed on reverse. D: 34mm. Holed with strand of Indian beads. Cf Belden #20 for larger sizes. $200
39. John Quincy Adams, a silver medal with larger than usual suspension hole. Bust r., Pipe tomahawk and peace pipe crossed. D: 76mm. Nice toning, probably a copy of the Federalist president who wasn't much interested in western Indian tribes. $150

40. Indian Points: Collection of Columbia River type arrowheads. A choice group of 60 gem points predominantly in colored cherts, flints, carnelians, and jaspers, and one fine banded agate. Symmetrically arranged as triangles and rosettes around volute-like center, and mounted in 14"x18" wood frame under glass. Points likely from Idaho. Nice! $200
41. Indian Points: Collection of Columbia River type arrowheads. Decoratively arranged lot of 58 points, mounted in 14"x18" wood frame under glass. Smaller gem-like points, oblate but mostly triangular notched-end types, in obsidian and some darker or colored flints and chert -- laid out as two lozenges flanking central bar. $150

Lot of 68 very fine points, black or dark colored, and mostly obsidian. predominantly variations on triangular notched-end shapes, but including a large and choice leaf-shaped blade in center. Arranged as radiating semi-circles at sides, and vertical and horizontal rows for rest. Mounted in 14"x18" wood frame under glass. Mostly Oregon or Northern California. $200
43. Indian Points: Collection of Columbia River type arrowheads. Mounted in 14"x18" wood frame under glass, a group of 48 mostly larger points of simpler triangular or leaf shapes. These in blackish, gray, brown, and other colored flint, chert, chalcedony and agates. Some interesting older material here, arranged as two concentric circles with additional row at sides. Probably from Idaho and Washington. $150
44. Indian Points: Collection of Columbia River type arrowheads. A fine group of 69 points, with at least 20 in colored or black flint and the rest obsidian, mounted in 14"x18" wood frame under glass. Arranged as large central radiating wheel with linear framing at top and sides. Mostly simpler notched-end blades, with some very fine larger triangular-shaped ones. Probably Idaho, Washington, and Oregon. $175
45. Indian Points: Collection of Columbia River type arrowheads. A fine group of 62 points, two in chert or flint, the rest obsidian -- arranged as two largege rosettes with two smaller above and below. Mostly of triangular notched-ends shape, with a few leaf-shaped. Mounted in 14"x18" wood frame under glass. Probably from Oregon/Northern California. $150
46. Kentucky Indians. A fine tobacco pipe bowl in the form of a human head. The pinkish-brown pipestone carving lacks a wood stem. The base has old inked inscription: "KY / 1901 / Long." H: 3". Nice quality. $500
47. Mexico, 19th century, an unsheathed modified cutlass or machete with mother-of-pearl inlays, including flying birds, on the curved handle. Blade is marked in Spanish: "L. LAVE & CA., ACERO FUNDIDO, No 87 NUP." L: 17". $400
48. North American Indians, perhaps Southwest, a contemporary. unidentified tribe’s handicraft: a necklace comprised of discs of polished shell with pendant, also carved, in the form of a stylized bird with spread wings. Very attractive. $100
49. Northwest Coast, A very attractive helmet type mask in the form of a swimming duck, with an orca’s head comprising the duck’s breast and a "scallop-edged" mask (as no. 85) forming its back and tail feathers. Finely and elegantly carved of a thick piece of wood. Duck in violet-blue and dark green with black details. Orca in dark and light green with linear details in red. Face mask with black, green, and red patterns, with indigo on forehead. L: 17.5". Very nice. $250 up
50. Northwest Coast, Very characteristic looking mask of a "horned" raptor bird or an owl. Mask squarish and neatly carved, with anthropomorphizing facial features. Eye almond-shaped and down sloping. Also a groove around the cheeks and mouth to indicate the border between the feathers and beak. Face in blue paint with white dots at "ears," with pupils in black, and mouth edged in red. H: 12.5". Pleasing and well carved. $350
51. Northwest Coast, another wooden mask closely similar, but by a somewhat less elegant hand. Wood grayish and weather stained, with slight traces of similar colors as previous mask under the patina. H: 13.75". $350
52. Northwest Coast, a good-sized mask, heavy and thick, carved as a fox head. Face angular and anthropomorphizing. With high, narrow squared ears, raised and arched brows, continuous with bridge of long nose, frame large almond-shaped eyes. Three sides of bottom of mask with animal’s toothy grin. Mask of grayish color. H: 17". A big and bold artwork. $350
53. Northwest Coast, Well carved and boldly colored mask of a bear. Mask essentially triangular in form with curved and swelling cranium surmounted by two narrow angular ears. The blocky muzzle thrusts forward sharply. The eyes small and circular, and the clenched teeth human but for the long incisors. Face ornamented with brightly painted patterns: red at lips, light blue-violet at forehead, sandy yellow at eyes, other colors at cheeks and chin. H: 18.25". A striking piece. $400
54. Northwest Coast, another similar mask to preceding but colors darker and more subdued but for pink of lips and unusual flame pattern at brows and chin. H:18.5". Attractive. $350
55. Northwest Coast, a third mask as preceding, with only two colors: red-brown at lips and panel across the eyes, and black at forehead-eyebrows. A fine rustic-looking object. H: 20". $350
56. Northwest Coast, G a good sized, thick shield-like mask with straight sides and rounded bottom and top. Anthropo-morphized eagle face with frowning stern visage, the nose a hawk’s or eagle’s beak. Brows and beard and "mustache" in black, eyes and mouth red-brown, beaky nose in blue. H: 19". A well carved and stylish object. $400
57. Northwest Coast, another nice eagle "shield" mask like preceding. This smaller, a bit more weathered with darker toning. H: 15". $350
58. Northwest Coast, a pair of large frontlet type masks of hollowed out V-shape. Each with prominent curved beak, circular bulging eyes, and raised eye feathers in a different color -- probably a hawk or an osprey. Head stained red-brown with beak and eye feathers in black. Each signed "AW" at bottom, near tip of beak. L: 18.75"; 19". Boldly stylized and decorative. $750/2
59. Northwest Coast, a carved wood frontlet in the form of an "eared" raptor bird. Its beak long and narrow with painted transverse grooves, and its eyes small and circular. Painted in green and yellow with linear details in black. L: 10.5". $200
60. Northwest Coast, A very decorative large oval dish, presumably like those used in the potlatch festivities. Dish of shallow depth with broad sloping sides and flat base. On exterior a central motif of a salmon with owl, frontal, standing within. Sides comprised of two very stylized frontal beaver(?) faces, plus oval and triangle ornament. In varied greens and blues, red, white, and black over darker wood stain. H: 20.5". Very attractive. $300
61. Northwest Coast, Thick oval mask, large and heavy, of a bird’s head. It has a narrow, curved beak on a very human face -- with heavy curved eyebrows atop prominent almond eyes, softly rounded and swelling cheeks and brows. Eyes outlined in black, green patterns on cheeks, crescentic shape in white on forehead with interior dots. Characteristic N. W. Coast petal-like "ruff" framing face. H: 15". $250
62. Northwest Coast, another bird faced mask closely similar in appearance to previous,. H: 16.25". Choice! $225
63. Northwest Coast, a fairly thick mask of lightweight wood, carved as a male face with rather beneficent expression. Descending down forehead a crest-like ridge which connects to the similarly raised eyebrows, all painted in black. At chin a suggestion of a beard or goatee. Paired scarification on left forehead, and smaller multi-colored ones at cheeks. Rest of face in red. H: 16". A very pleasant piece. $225
64. Northwest Coast, another example closely similar to preceding red-faced mask. With this one, however, there is larger scarification on cheeks. H: 15.75". $225
65. Northwest Coast, another red-face mask as preceding two, but this more darkly colored and older looking. H: 16". $225
66. Northwest Coast, a thick mask of light weight wood, with forcefully carved "grotesque" face with broad flat nose, and wide grimacing mouth with two long canines. Leaves at sides, parted hair(?) at top, and two recumbent bears or dogs on head. Face painted blue-gray, black at head band and eyes, green at "leaves.," with bears in brown. H: 14.5". A vivid characterization; a great wall ornament. $400
67. Northwest Coast, a good sized mask of light wood, perhaps cedar. Stylishly carved face in traditional style with large eyes and sharply creased folds running from nostrils to side of mouth. Nicely carved with some weathering and dark patina. H: 18.5" $400
68. Northwest Coast, a walrus skull with scrimshawed tusks. Piece comprised of front of skull only, with teeth and tusks in place and intact. Each decorated with nicely scrimshawed scene. One a finely executed Eskimo portrait, the other the head of a walrus. (Perhaps the hunter and the victim.) L: 20". A fascinating collectible. $2500
69. Northwest Coast, Haida, ca. 1870-90. Argillite totem pole, with chiseled out groove on back. Thunderbird atop, and below it a beaver wearing a skil. Under beaver is the head of an orca with a large halibut in its mouth. An owl-like mask completes the totem, which is on a base of its own. Perfect except for small old chips off beak of thunderbird. H: 14". Unsigned, but perhaps by Charlie Edensaw. Cf. Barbeau, Haida Carvers in Argillite, p. 75, similar in style to no.87, also p. 79. Ex Santa Fe Gallery purchase. $3500
70. Northwest Coast, Haida, ca. 1875. A skinner’s knife with nice bone handle, chipped on one side. The steel blade is of Islamic origin with Arabic inscription on one side, and a stylized fish design on the other. The fish maybe Islamic but resembles Haida work to the point that it was obtained by a Haida Indian in trade (The knife perhaps Central Asian or Turkic and entering the area via Russian traders.) The knife in a simple deerskin sheath. Knife L: 8.75"; sheath, 7". $300
71. Northwest Coast, Kwakiutl contemporary. Fine elaborate mask with broad, stylized, almost monstrous features -- likely he was, "the Wild Man of the Woods." He has thick, broad lips in wide-mouthed grimace, plus bulging eyes, and aquiline, beak-like nose. The whole painted in colorful zones and elegant designs -- in white, pink, red, violet, green, and black. Mask with added details of horse hair and feathered tufts at brows and atop head. H: 14". Very compelling. For series, cf. Kwakiutl Art, pp. 218-223. $450
72. Northwest Coast, Haida, late 19th century. a butcher’s knife marked, "JUKES COULSON", with remarkable painted goatskin or parchment sheath. The long steel blade has a five rivet wood handle over the tang. The sheath’s painted design is of a raven standing over a bird-helmeted demon. A small stylized face painted below the top of the sheath, and a belt loop on the back side. Knife L: 13"; sheath L: 9". $500
73. Northwest Coast, Haida or Kwakiutl style. A very well carved, thick wood mask of man with grimacing expression, his teeth bared. Deeply incised grooves at forehead, eyes, and corners of mouth emphasize the emotion portrayed. The neat, regular features painted in white, red, and black patterns, all obscured by dark patina. H: 12". A very fine object. $400
74. Northwest Coast, Haida, recent. Two attractive souvenir pieces made to resemble finely carved argillite. A seated bear wearing skil, a hat, atop its head. H: 8". Also a totem pole, by Inca Products, North surrey, B.C. H: 5". $50-$75/2
75. Northwest Coast, Haida-style a shaman’s pendant of carved femur bone, in totem style showing a ram atop a bear atop an eagle. Holed in back for suspension. Nicely carved with even patina. Well preserved with old inked museum or collection number on back. H: 10.75". An unusual item, boldly carved. $1000 up
76. Northwest Coast, Haida-style. carved wood dance mask of grimacing round-face "ghost" or "shark." Black and olive painted designs, somewhat faded, are evident. Considerable attention was lavished on the teeth by the artist. Eyes deeply incised, overall a stylish mask. H: 14" (36 cm.).Cf. Coe, Sacred Circle, no. 278. $350
77. Northwest Coast, Haida-style. wooden human face mask with European-style beard and mustache -- perhaps a "stranger" mask, generally a comic figure in the dance dramas. Carved of light weight wood, with long straight nose, and prominent shelf-like brows. Mask stained a deep green with beard and mustache delicately painted in black. Interior somewhat smoothed from use. H: 11.4". $150
78. Northwest Coast, Haida-style an unusual and elaborately carved war club, fashioned from a knobbed tree branch. The wooden handle is beautifully decorated with panels of animal and bird heads, as well as a full bodied swimming seal and a full bodied lizard. The wood’s naturally knobby points are painted as bird heads. Incised stars decorate the long handle. Probably used in potlatch ceremonies. L: 34". $200
79. Northwest Coast, Haida-style. an old skinner’s knife with a well carved jade handle in the form of a standing, stylized bear, its hands clasped in front. The handle a very handsome spinach green with zones of yellow green. The bear’s circular eyes inlaid with ivory or shell. The unmarked steel blade curves upward. Handle repaired, otherwise nicely preserved. L: 9.5". Very rare. A fine object. Green jade deposits are known from scattered deposits along the northern Pacific Coast. $500

80. Northwest Coast, Haida-style. an unsheathed, forged steel knife. The small handle of incised and carved horn with inlaid abalone shell to form a stylized face. L: 12". An unusual piece. $400

94. Northwest Coast, Tlingit. Copper dagger and decorated triangular pommel, with handle neatly wrapped in strips of hide. The fairly broad blade is tapered, with raised midrib. The wood pommel is a beautifully rendered anthropomorphized shark face. Its wide, down turned mouth and circular eyes inlaid with attractive silver and green abalone shell. Slight smooth wear to pommel, with one small tack missing from the side. Otherwise, wood with fine old patina. Blade looks as if it was covered with a pitch-like substance, as a protective measure, sometime in the past. L: 18.75" (48 cm.). A very important museum piece!

112. Plains Indians, Cheyenne. Robust belt knife with broad, symmetrical lancelet steel blade, brass guard, and dark walnut grips. Added to the six brass rivets in the handle are white metal inlays forming a rosette, a crescent, and a bar. The interesting sheath is two panels of tacked together rawhide overlaid with snakeskin, held together with two rows of upholstery tacks along the edge. Decorative strip of black felt at inner row of tack, and a tuft of buffalo hair at hilt of sheath. Well preserved but blade and tacks suffer from a proper cleaning. 113. Plains Indians, Crow., A fine iron-bladed pipe tomahawk . The hollowed out wood shaft is decorated with three cross groupings of brass tacks. The socketed blade has an openwork heart design (the point bent slightly) in the center of a perforated dot image around the blade. The pipe bowl, on the opposite side of the haft, is forged from the same metal as the blade. L: 25.5"; W: (blade): 10.5". A nice specimen. Cf. Petersen, American Indian Tomahawks, pl. 115. Plains Indians, Northern tribes, probably Sioux. A fine iron-bladed pipe tomahawk of nineteenth century origin. The hollowed out wood haft is wrapped with hide from about two thirds of its length. Mouthpiece carved as a bird head with an acorn in its mouth. Brass tacks form the bird’s eyes. Pipe bowl may have been re-drilled at a subsequent date, presumably to improve the pipe’s smoking characteristics. L: 21.5". A fine specimen. $300

121. Plains Indians, probably Sioux. Pipe tomahawk with combined steel ax head and pipe bowl. The head without touchmarks. The finely carved haft is decorated with row of five tacks on either side of the handle near the ax head (only four visible in one of the rows), and another five lower down along the back. Frontal edge of handle, just below the head, with four notches. At base of handle, near pipe mouth, are finger grooves for enhanced gripping. Handle with some age cracks; modest delamination of blade. Overall L: 23"; blade, L: 8". A really nice, elegant piece, with fine patina on haft and typically rusted blade. See Petersen no. 146 (there as Sioux). $350
122. Plains Indians, Sioux. a very nicely preserved beaded sheathed skinner’s steel knife. The knife has a finger guard on top, while the bottom guard is apparently missing. The rounded handle has an iron conical pommel. The folded leather sheath is beautifully beaded in blue, red, black, and yellow, along with two beaded tassels. Knife L: 11"; sheath, L: 8.5". $350
123. Plains Indians, Sioux. a skinner’s knife with extraordinarily fine beaded leather sheath. The entire face of the sheath is neatly beaded in geometric designs with virtually every color of bead available. The back of the sheath has an interesting Indian drawing depicting a feather bonneted Indian and confronting horse. Long leather thongs ending in copper bells complete the magnificent sheath. A Collection of Gorgets
These crescentic shaped metal insignia represented the last vestige of armor. They were worn during the 18th century around the neck from a ribbon as an indication of rank. Many gorgets were traded off and worn in like manner by the American Indians as late as the end of the last century
