153. Bactria, 1 st Millenium BC. A terracotta hand modeled round vessel with flat bottom and vertical walls. Inside the space has been divided into 3 quadrants, with a crescent-shaped device on a small base at the center. The whole vessel is decorated with a floral design over the orange buff. A floral symbol is also painted at the bottom of the largest compartment and on top of the walls and around the rim. H: 4”: Dia: 6 ½”. A very odd piece from a very old English collection. $850

154. Judaea, Iron Age I, c. 1200 – 930 BC. A single spout pinched lamp with raised base and thick bottom. Intact with some encrustation and signs of use. L: 4 ¼”; H: 2 1/.4”. $300

155. Holy Land, Iron Age, c. 1200 – 800 BC. A lot of 3 terracotta items. The first are 2 pottery decanters, one red buff and the other a gray buff. Both intact with good deposits, the gray buff example with a pressure crack just above the foot. Also included is a simple terracotta oil lamp, Byzantine or Islamic, with raised fill hole and spout. L: 3 5/8”. 3 nice items from everyday life in the group. $300/3

156. Etruria, Etruscan, c. 4 th Century BC. A blackware kantharos in imitation of the types from Apulia. Some fading to the colors and a repair on the rim. Quite large and rare. H: 4 ½: W: 6”. Etruscan copies of the Apulian types are quite scarce. Ex. old Orange County collection, attributed by Trendall himself. $750

157. South Italia, Apulia, c. 350 BC. A choice Messapian high handled vessel, the body is decorated with black bands and petal strokes adorn the shoulders. Intact with a minor chip to the ringed foot. H: 7”: W: 6 ½”. An attractive example with vibrant colors. $750

158. Greek South Italy, Apulia, c. 340 - 330 BC. A lot of 4 small blackware pots. Two of the four are repaired; two largest examples are the nicest and are intact. One of the intact pieces with ribbed body; other intact example, a 2 handle cup with rosette design on inside. Heights from 2" - 3" tall by 2 ¼”-3 ¾” in diameter. $600/4

159. Greek South Italy, Apulia, c. 330 BC. A lovely trefoil pitcher with single handle and vertically incised “ribbed” design on body. Some incrustation still evident. Intact and in choice condition. H: 6 ¾”. $500

160. Greek South Italy, Apulia, c. 330 BC. A finely potted Kylix with nice laurel design on the inside. On footed base. H: 1 ¾”, diameter not including handles, 6 3/8". Choice! $500

161. Greek South Italy, Apulia, c. 330 BC. A nice “trefoil” pitcher with band of red floral glyphs around center of vase; top and bottom in blackware. Thick handle with semi-funneled spout. Some typical chipping mostly on painted design. H: 8 ½”. Nice. $850

162. Greek South Italy, c. 300 – 100 BC. A nice creme slip mold made figurine of a standing female figure, perhaps, Hera. She holds patera in her right hand at her waist and tall flat headdress. In very nice condition with much facial detail still evident. H: 5 ½”. $450

163. Lot of 2 South Italian pottery items. The first is a Messapian pyxis, 4 th century BC, with nice floral design around the shoulder, H: 2 7/8”; W: 3 ¼”. The second is an Apulian Calene ware oinochoe, H: 3 ¾”, intact with some wear on the spout. 2 pieces in the lot. $350/2

164. Late Roman – Byzantine, c. 5 th – 7 th Century AD. A terracotta dark gray buff storage jar with ribbed, conical body, concave foot, and four lug handles. The mouth possess a wide, flat lip which is down turned. The vessel has been deformed during the firing process with a large half-circular impression from the base of another vessel on the side. Intact with an age crack and some sea encrustation due to having come from a shipwreck. H: 10 ½”. A rather odd and interesting vessel. Also included is another crème slipped vessel from the same shipwreck. The vessel has a narrow, flat base, the body tapering to a wide, flat shoulder with a narrow neck. The neck is broken at the base and there are no signs of any handle attachments on the body. H: 7 ½”; W: 4 ½”. Another odd and interesting vessel from the eastern Mediterranean. 2 vessels in the lot. $500/2

165. Thailand, 14 th – 16 th Century. A Sukhothai Ware bowl from Sukhothai kiln with a stylized horse head facing to lt. within central medallion. Black lines around the rim as well. Repaired at one side and with some fading from age, but otherwise intact. Dia: 9 ¼”; H: 2 5/8”. Sukhothai ware is a very characteristic pottery style from South East Asia. $200

166. Eastern Europe, Scythian Tribes, c.8th – 7th CenturyBC. A bronze coiled “snake” bracelet with flattened terminals. Intact and a good example. L: 4 ¾”; Dia: 2 ½”.     $300

167. Etruscan, c. 8 th – 7 th Century BC. A nice bronze spectacle broach comprised of two identical sections of spiraled circular designs with ampersand-like design holing both sections together. L: 3 ¾”. Diameter of each spiral is 1 ½”. In choice with nice patina. $650

168. South Italy, Canosan, c. BC 3 rd century. An exceptionally fine mold made terra cotta of a standing lady. She is elegantly posed wearing long flowing gown and thick headband. Exquisite detail to her face, hair and fluffy robe. Much of original pastel white, pink and red colors still vibrantly displayed throughout entire pieces. Piece appears to be intact with no evidence of repair or restoration. Worth of a fine collection and strong bid. H: 11 ½”. Old San Francisco Collection. Canosan refers to one of the distinctive artistic styles of the Greek colonies of Southern Italy. Canosan pottery and figurines are characterized by the use of delicate pastel painted colors rather than glazes. Due to the delicacy of such paints one rarely finds a piece where more than traces of the colors remain. This figurine is highly exceptional in that nearly all of the original paint remains beautifully intact. $8500

169. Roman, c. 1 st Century AD. A bronze roundel of a facing Zeus-Ammon head in high, almost three dimensional relief, possessing full beard, horns, moustache and a fabulous green patina. Three of the four tabs that mounted it to a larger composition still in place. D:41 mm. Joel L. Malter Collection. Register of Art, 2001. A very example of Roman bronze working which has acquired a beautiful patina!    $2500 

170. Roman, c. 1 st – 2 nd Century AD. A very interesting and fine bone carving of the head of a facing man. Stoic facial expression with wavy hair combed backwards. Glossy patina with dark brownish green coloring. A small but fine piece! H: 1 ½”. $750

171. Rome, c. 1 st – 2 nd Century AD. A bronze looped phallic amulet with the entire male genitalia and part of the abdomen. Probably was part of a bronze hanging oil lamp. Intact with a nice, even brown-black patination. L: 3cm. $200

172. Rome, c. 1 st – 2 nd Century AD. A nice bronze appliqué bust of Isis from a box or other vessel. She gazes slightly to left with small headdress consisting of solar disc and plumes. Well preserved with a green patina with flecks of red. Joel L. Malter Collection, Register of Art-1411. Choice with slight ancient losses to extreme top right of hair bow. Would make a lovely pendant for a necklace. H: 1 ½”   $950  

173. Roman, c. 1 st – 3 rd Century AD. A lovely round bronze appliqué with the head of a facing Medusa in high relief in center. In a nice rich chocolate color, piece appears to be a mini shield in appearance. Would make a great pendant for necklace! D: 1 3/8". Choice condition. Joel L. Malter Collection.      $650 

174. Roman, c. 2 nd Century AD. A lovely bronze appliqué in the form of a facing youth, a loop on the top of his head which probably held a loop on the top edge of a large bronze vessel. The loop shows much wear from use. Nicely styled with even dark patina throughout. H: 2". Would make a great pendant for a necklace. Just a chain is needed and it's read to wear! Joel L. 175. Roman, c. 2 nd – 3 rd Century AD. A small and nicely carved marble figurine of a slightly rotund standing male figure. He wears bulky toga and appears to hold a scepter against his right shoulder with his right hand. Left hand holds the bulky draped portion of his robe. His eyes and hair are well defined and his head appears to extend from circular and wide brimmed collar around his neck. Nice toning throughout. Piece may have been affixed to a larger carving as legs are not evident and instead a short and flat rectangular projections is in its place. H: 3 7/8". Nice. $500

176. Roman, c. 2 nd – 3 rd Century AD. An attractive small marble carving of a young lady. The bust depicts a girl with long flowing hair that drapes her forehead above a thin headband and hangs down the backside of her head and rests on her shoulders. Eyes are well carved but unfortunately her nose and mouth have deteriorated with only faint traces remaining. H: 8". Still desirable! Mounted on nice red marble base. $2500

177. Roman, c. 2 nd – 3 rd Century AD. A small standing rooster with nice detail throughout. His tail flows downwards and is part of round base. Mounted on mottled marble circular base. H: 2.5". Old San Francisco Collection. $400

178. Roman, c. 4 th – 5 th Century AD. A very attractive silver fibula in the form of an eagle holding snake in his beak. Extremely well cast with wonderful detail and nice overall toning. Pin is mostly missing on the back side but with traces still evident. L: 2 3/8". $1500

179. Roman, c. 1 st – 4 th Century AD. A lot of 5 interesting bronze pieces (one in lead). Lot includes a appliqué with face of a young boy in high relief facing forward. D: 1 7/8". Also what appears to be a pie crimper with rooster seated atop tall handle with serrated circular spinning wheel at bottom. Portion of wheel missing. H: 4 ¼”. Also a flat plaque in the shape of a stylized heart with large semi-loop at top. H: 4 ¼”. Lastly a lot of 2 round appliqués. The one is lead is flat with 2 standing birds atop 2 line of text reading, “THKY / PIA. Some losses in casting process. D: 2 ¼”. Lastly another appliqué in shape and design of a miniature shield with 4 pointed star in center. Some losses at rim and on back side. D: 2 3/8". All in nice condition. $650/5

180. Late Roman - Byzantine, c. 5 th – 7 th Century. A lot of 4 identical floral appliqués in bronze billon-bronze with silver plating. Two are partially cleaned and the others with original patination. All are about 2" tall by 1 ½” wide and nice! $500/4

181. Byzantine, c. AD 1000. A collection of 35 nice lead weights. Most are intact and attributable. One broken, a few with nice Christ portraits. Proper cleaning could greatly enhance the condition and value of this collection. $700/35

182. A lot of 11 bronze and silver items including 6 bronze fibulas, one of which is a zoomorphic type in the form of a horse, a bronze box latch with a stylized head, 3 silver little birds and an Islamic stamp seal with tall handle. The fibulae are mostly Roman, one of Scythian character. The bronze latch is also Roman and the three little birds are Late Roman or Byzantine. An interesting mixed group! $500/11

183. A lot of 11 iron implements, mostly Roman, but some perhaps a little later. Some are fire staters and others are handles or serve other purposes. Each is in good shape, considering their age and composition. Lengths from 2 1/8” to 5 ½”. A good study group. $250/11

184. A lot of 5 interesting pieces. The first is a molded terracotta standing male of Alexandrian manufacture, c. 1 st Century BC/AD wearing chiton and holding a cornucopia. The second piece is the head from an ushabti, Late Period, c. 664 – 30 BC, with some original paint and a Phoenician upper torso of a woman, c. 6 th – 4 th Century BC, holding a large circular disc against her chest. Sizes are from 2" - 5 ¾”. Also included are 2 bronze items. The first is a Roman bust of a chubby male figure, c. 3 rd – 4 th Century AD, with stoic expression and a handle(?) with a lion head at top, also Roman, 1 st to 3 rd Century AD. Both are nice with attractive patinas. Sizes are 1 7/8" and 3". Five pieces in the group. $400/5

190. Eastern Mediterranean, c. 3rd Century BC – 3rd Century AD. A lot of 20 terra cotta bullae from the Hellenistic through Roman periods. Some with string holes, but all used to seal documents, bags or similar. Images include seated and standing gods and goddesses, male and female heads and busts, and animals. Widths average around 20mm and each is clear and easy to see. A fun study lot, with the fingerprints of the maker still evident on some of them. Lines on the back of each impression show they were originally on sealed papyrus scrolls.    $200/20

191. Western Anatolian, Late Chalcolithic, c.2700 - 2400 BC. A white marble head from a Kilia idol with a low, broad crest arch, small ears, and a simple, conical nose. Minor chip on back of head and old museum numbers on base of neck. 1” x 1”. Old museum mount hole on back as well as numbers. From an old European collection and Deaccessioned from a museum. $300

192. Anatolia, c. 2000 - 1800 BC. A steatite figure of Cycladic form. Standing figure with arms downwards with hands touching together at waist (forming "V" over his chest). Legs are together and straight; no feet.  Round head with slight facial detail; hair or small hat at top; ears evident as well. Nicely polished patina throughout. On custom wood stand. H: 2 ¼”. 193. Mesopotamia, Tel Barak, c. 3 rd Millennium BC. A rare and fine alabaster "eye" idol, a three eyed variety. Of semi-rectangular shape with drilled hole at center near top just below incised carving of 3 small “eyes” in horizontal posture. H: 2 ¼”; W: 1". Joel L. Malter Collection, ROA-937. $500

194. Mesopotamia, Jemdat Nasr, c. 3 rd Millennium BC. A small and finely carved white stone amulet in the form of bull. Face and body with detail; in posture as if to stand or sit. About 1 3/8" long and pristine! On stand. Joel L. Malter Collection, ROA-293. $400

195. Mesopotamian, Post-Akkadian, Gudea, steward of the city-state of Lagash, c. 2200 – 2050 BC. A fine terra cotta foundation cone. In perfect condition with neatly inscribed cuneiform. Bottom of cone with rounded and raised base. H: 5". Joel L. Malter Collection, ROA-273. $1000

196. Mesopotamia, Sumerian c. 1953 – 1935 BC. A cone of “King Ishme-Dagan of Isin”, Text is written in two columns of cuneiform with rest blank. Excellent condition. Joel L. Malter Collection, ROA-1593. $1500

197. Western Iran, Amlash, c. 1400 - 1200 BC. A finely crafted gray-ware ceramic rasp like instrument in the shape of a cucumber. Top has long and open slit, hollow center with perpendicular incised grooves running along slit. Eight holes for additional notes and wide loop handle are on bottom of instrument. L: 5 ¾”. Ex. Jay Gluck Collection. Rare. $500

198. Western Iran, c.1400 – 1200 BC. A terra cotta double-chambered rhyton-type vessel in the form of a bull. The head is quite small, with tiny horns, the legs short and stumpy, a spout protruding from the chest area. On the back is a wide bowl for filling the vessel. Some restoration, but an attractive and interesting piece. H: 8 1/8”; L: 9”. $900

199. Peru, Inca, c. 1300-1500 AD. A wonderful miniaure bronze standing stag; multi-horned! Rare! Animal stands with long tail curved back. He has large ears, snout and pair of antelers, with 3 horns. Some slight encrustation evident due to the impurity of silver. H: 2". Choice! Ex. Ken Klassen Collection, Joel L. Malter Collection, Register of Art-894. A Rare and wonderful miniature that my father was very proud to have acquired! $2500

200. Western Iran, Luristan, c. 1000 - 800 BC. A very ornate small bronze standing goat. Goat is well detailed with long torso and long curved and pointed horns. Back 2/3 of torso enlarges into a thicker hind section with nice incised design. An original hole is pierced from shoulder to shoulder. Very attractive green patina throughout. In excellent condition. Joel L. Malter Collection. L: 2 5/8", H: 1 5/8".  $450  

201. Western Iran, Luristan, c. 1200 – 800 BC. A finely crafted miniature bronze rider on horseback. Both rider and horse are highly stylized, the rider with loop as right hand. Height and length are 2". Right rear leg has been reattached. Nice patina throughout. $350

202. Western Iran, Luristan, c. 1200 – 800 BC. A lot of 5 bronze spear points. All with nice green patinas. S: 6 ½” – 10 ½” in length. A nice lot. $500/5

203. Western Iran, c.1000 – 800 BC. A fine bronze cosmetic container with applicator wand. A beautiful and finely crafted bronze vessel with ornate incised design throughout. Top of applicator wand with horse head in flat profile. Bottom of wand incised adornment that appears to have a second horse head at one end. Some losses to container; still an attractive and desirable item. Overall length when together 4 ¼”. Choice! Joel L. Malter Collection.   $1500

204. Luristan, c. 1000 - 900 BC. A bronze zebu stamp seal with and "X" pattern on the bottom. Size is 1 ½” in height and length. A wonderful piece with choice glossy green patina.  The loss of the front left leg appears to have been a casting flaw. Hole pierced laterally from shoulder to shoulder under tall hump (clogged with ancient residue). It is also ex. Roberto Ardon (a prominent LA dealer in the 60-80's; died many years ago). His Register of Art number is 1064.    $2500 

205. Iran, Amlash, c. 1000 BC. A bronze standing ibex, dominated by its huge pair of notched horns, which are joined by a pair of horizontal bars. Applied knobs enliven the simplified geometric form of the figure over much of its body. A suspension loop is on the back, just behind the neck. Nicely patinated and the two horns and the pairs of legs are pressed together, perhaps it was fastened to a larger piece. See J. Biers, ed., A Peaceable Kingdom: Animals in Ancient Art from the Leo Mildenberg Collection, Part III (Mainz, 1996), 241 for a similar example. $750

206. Iran, Kerman, c. 1200 – 1000 BC. A lot of 3 small bronze votive animals. Of simplistic but very nice style and represent horses or antelope. One even resembles a camel! Each is intact and as found. Lengths ¾” (20mm) to 1 ¼” (32mm). From an old English collection, acquired in the 1960’s. Rare! $500/3

207. Near East, 1 st Millennium BC. An alabaster bowl of squat spherical form with a broad shoulder and a raised ridge around the circumference. A vertically sloping raised central ridge surrounds the rim and the vessel sits on a carved circular pad base. Some chipping and minor losses. Diam: 3 ¼”. Ex. Bonham’s of London. $650

208. Northwestern Iran, 9th – 8th Century BC. Bronze plaque of a stylized horse. The mane is a row of radiating spikes, the face geometricized. The stylization of the animal silhouette in spiky angular lines is typical of the nomadic “animal style” art associated with the Scythians and other tribes. L: 6 ¾”. For a closely similar horse, see Arts de ‘ancien Iran, exhibiting catalog, Musee Borely, Marseille 1975, pp. 66-67, no. 197; Also above catalog, no. 74. $750

209. Scythian, c. 4 th Century BC. A thin hammered gold (1.01 grams) garment appliqué in form of prancing hare.  Rabbit with long ears which flow backwards also has 3 small holes for attachment. One hole in each leg and one near tip of ears. Size is 1 ¼”. Choice condition. Joel L. Malter Collection, Register of Art-1412.   $1500

210. Sasanian, c. 4 th – 5 th Century AD. A fine but fragmentary steatite lion with its mouth in open work (fangs and eyes are well detailed). Forepart of seated lion with full mane faces to right with his front legs tucked under the lower portion of his mane. Entire piece is wonderfully carved. Ancient break is apparent by perfect blending of break coloring with rest of piece. A powerful sculpture. L: 1 ½”.  Joel L. Malter Collection, Register of Art-1383.    $5000

211. A lot of 3 ancient bronzes. The first is an Egyptian bronze amulet of the Apis Bull, Late period, c. 664 – 30 BC. Intact with thick patination. L: 1”; The second is a Western Asiatic bronze quadruped, c. 8 th – 7 th Century BC. L: 1 ¾”, mounted on a stand; The last is from Western Iran, early 1 st Millenium BC. A bronze antelope, some losses to legs and a horn, H: 1 3/8”. All ex Royal Athena Galleries, New York. 3 interesting bronzes in the group. $300/3

212. A pair of Seljuk bronze items. The first is a highly stylized finial from a larger composition, H: 1 ½”. The second piece is a bronze handle from a vessel in the form of a stylized bird, L: 1 ¾”. Both nicely patinated and mounted on a custom base. Both ex. 213. Bactrian, c. 1200 – 800 BC. A bronze dagger with rounded handle and narrow leafed blade with raised midriff. Heavy patination on blade and some of tip missing. A scarcer type and quite attractive. L: 7”. $450

233. Kushan, c.2nd – 3 rd Century AD. This wonderful Gandharan schist carving, 6 ½” wide, 4 ¾” high, depicting a scene featuring Buddha flanked by two acolytes. Buddha is depicted seated on a low platform, holding an object in his hand. There is a tower symbol on the left side of the scene, which is framed by additional decorative elements. Beautifully detailed, with great attention paid to the folds of the robes, body positions and headdresses. A lovely example. $800

244. European, c. 17 th – 18 th Century. A carved shell with the image of St. George slaying the dragon. Nicely incised work with excellent detail and one small hole in the field beneath the horse. 245. Russian c. 17 th - 18 th Century. A large and attractive brass cross with very slight traces of the original blue enameling. A medieval looking Christ occupies the central position. Above the upper arm of the cross an enlarged panel with God, the Father, and below, the Dove of the Holy Ghost flanked by angels. Extensive text in margins and on back header. H: 6" x 3.5" wide. Probably the same workshop as British Museum Guide, Byzantine, 2nd edition, 1921, pl. XIV. Choice condition with nice dark patina.      $750

253. Mexico, Teotihuacan, c. AD 450-650. An alabaster mask with shell inlay on left eye. Carved with classic Teotihuacan idealized features, including deep almond shaped eyes with one inlay remaining, a prominent ridged nose, and an open mouth; two holes drilled through the sides for suspension. In mottled shades of pale green and creme. Back of piece is smooth and ever so slightly concaved. Some minor damage to area just below right drilled hole when viewing piece from above. From an old Midwest collection. H: 5 and a quarter inches; W: 5 inches. Very nice condition with some chalky encrustation to right eye and eyebrow.
