506. Villanovan, c.7th Century BC. A bronze bracelet comprised of two thickly wound bronze coils at either end of simple rounded bronze band. Intact and attractive with attractive apple green patina. S: 2.5". The Villanovans were the Iron Age predecessors of the Etruscans and are known for their skill in working bronze. They are named after a modern town near Bologna, Italy and settled the area of Etruria by the 11th century BC, later to be assimilated by the Etruscans. $500 |

531. Roman Asia Minor, early 3 rd Century AD. A fragmentary marble face in three quarter profile bust of Roman god of eroticism, Cupid. The portrait shows a full cheeked boyish face with sensual features, heavy lidded open eyes and parted lips. This is an original marble profile piece, most likely from a sculpture group or frieze of figures. A very attractive piece and probably from a workshop in Asia Minor. H: 5”; W: 5”. Custom made stand. 532. Roman, Eastern Mediterranean, 1st Century AD. A dark blue mold blown hexagonal flask of the "vessel-mask" type, depicting alternating vessels and masks on each if its six panels. Each image is framed within an architectural structure resembling an aedicula, the arches filled with egg-shaped objects, while below the ground line, encircling the entire flask, there is a continuous garland with clusters of fruit in each swag. The vessels depicted include 2 amphoras and a krater. The masks depicted are Dionysian in character and resemble satyrs or youths. On the bottom of the flask there is a concentric circle motif. The flask has a tubular neck with a flared lip and folded-in rim. The flask was formed by blowing the glass into a two-part mold. The designs are a bit weak, but the piece is intact with some crème colored encrustation. H: 2 ¾". See Fortuna Arts, Glasses of Antiquity, 2002, nos. 25-27 for this description. Also See Toledo 1995, pp. 113ff and especially pp. It is suggested that they may have been ritual vessels related to the cult of Sidonian Astarte. This type of flask was probably produced near the ancient city of Sidon in Phoenicia (Toledo 1995). $800+ |

546. Hellenistic Intaglio, c. 200 BC. A large 30 x 23 x 5 mm two-sided gem carved in striped white agate. The same artist engraved a scene with a standing Nike feeding a rampant stag who stands alongside her. The stag¹s horns are slightly higher than the goddess¹ head. She wears a flowing chiton and carries a large set of wings. On the other side a standing sea goddess holding a tall trident in her right hand, stands before an altar above which she holds a small suppliant figure. There is a chip behind the small suppliant. Otherwise this double gem stone is fresh and most attractive. $600 |

He is posed in the typical hunched over position, propping up his chin with one hand, with the elbow resting on the bent knee. The individual represented is apparently an elder, nicely adorned with jewelry, including numerous bracelets. The gesture is lively and animated, showing the artisan’s high skill lever. 588. Peru, Lambayeque, c. 1200 – 1300 AD. This exceptional Lambayeque-Chimu transitional vessel is 9 ¼” high and features an elaborate spout, mounted atop a human head on one side, a feline head on the other. A serpent is emerging from each head and faces the central portion of the spout, which is formed in the shape of a human head wearing a crown. The chamber is a classic Lambayeque type, while the construction of the spout and the style of the faces show a clear Chimu influence. Strong paint and deposits. $850 |

592. Peru, Paracas, c. 200 BC - 100 AD. A unique large size trophy head. This vessel executed in ochre tone browns, red and white colors. Striking morbid expression of pain and horror mouth fully opened as to ready to cream. It shows between the eyes that end of the rope that was usually placed in order to hang the trophy in display. It measures 7 ½" in height. Some surface loss to surface as well as chips on teeth, but otherwise in excellent condition. $1800 |

601. New Kingdom, 19 th – 20 th Dynasty, c.1292 – 1075 BC. Another very interesting hand modeled terracotta ushabti with greatly exaggerated arms and a large head. The form is basically traditional, with a tripartite headdress in stylistic form and small face and false beard. The arms suggest almost some form of drapery or fabric and the implements the hands held were originally added in paint, which is now faded away. Intact with some surface abrasion and one of the more interesting and strange ushabtis from the eastern delta region. H: 6 5/8”. $500 |

608. Nigeria, Yoruba. A beaded "crown" for a chief. Multi-colored beadwork covers this entire conical-shaped item, save for an inch of the very top, which is cloth-covered. It might have had a finial, but then, these do come in many styles. There is a face on each side of the piece, with typical scarification on the cheeks. Between the faces are groups of three birds. 609. Egypt, Late Period, c.664 – 30 BC. A large light blue faience amulet of Pataikos, standing naked and bow-legged, with hands to the side of his belly. The color of the glaze has faded to white in most places and the piece is repaired at the midsection. H: 2 3/8” and mounted on a wooden black. See Petrie, Amulets, pl. XXXI, no. 176 j-l for similar examples. Pataikos was associated with Ptah of Memphis but also had an independent existence as an apotropaic deity. $300 |
