2318. Mexico, Colima, c. 250BC-250AD., a very impressive standing ceramic warrior! In red ware he wears spiked collar around his neck with 2 similar spikes protruding from his rear. He holds a long slender club in his left hand and supports it on top of his left foot. In raised right hand he holds a wide bladed axe. Nice patina and overall condition is choice, with only small chip on his right elbow. H: 13". $1,850 |

2322. Mexico, Colima, c. 200 BC – 300 AD. A very rare Colima zoomorphic effigy incensario, 5-1/4" high. The dog itself is 4" long, stands on all fours, with the tail curled around the side of the body and has an expressive face. A functional whistle with great tone is built into its nose. He carries a perforated censor bowl, studded with 4 bird heads, on his back. Nice applique work. Minor repair. $600 |

2326. Mexico, Nayarit, c. 250 BC - 250 AD. This fine seated male figure from West Mexico is 5-5/8", depicted with the long arms holding the bent legs up against his chest. He is wearing a fancy headdress with long feathers, as well as the typical nose, ear and arm ornaments. Great white and red-orange paint overall. A nice example of this sheep-face variant. $350 |

2327. Mexico, Jalisco-Michoacan, c. 1-300 AD. A fine polychrome figure, 6-1/4" tall, posed seated on a round stool. This is an early Jiquilpan or Briseas type, depicted with hand to mouth in an eating gesture. Lots of good paint indicating clothing, a serrated headdress and decorated stool make this a superb example of an extremely rare type. Small repair. Ex-Hasso von Winning. 2328. Mexico, Olmec, a ca 500 BC- 300AD. A much sought after Olmec duck. This vessel is wonderfully executed in traditional black colored pottery folded wings with feather work nicely incised. Duck depicted in seated or in nesting position and measures slightly over 6” in height by approximately 8” in length, Minor professional restoration done to its bill and tail but not detracting in anyway from its wonderful presence. $3,000 |

2333. Mexico, Mayan c. 350-700 AD, another small ceramic bowl in attractive orange, brown and creme slip. Two red horizontal band of polychrome adorns the outside of bowl. 2335. Mexico, Mayan, c. 550 – 700 AD. This nicely detailed deity figure is 4-1/2" tall and depicts one of the simian deities from Maya mythology. The grim face is adorned with large ear ornaments and he is wearing a necklace with pectoral pendant. Overall in excellent condition, with good deposits and good sound on the built-in whistle. $300 |

2336. Mexico, Maya, c. 800 - 1000 AD. A great Puuc Slate Ware tripod plate from the Terminal Classic period. The beautiful central design of this 11-1/8" diameter tripod plate is painted in blue and orange against the buff terra cotta slip. The entire piece is covered with fine root marks, which gives the surface a wonderful texture. It is in perfect condition. See Cenote of Sacrifice, page 39, for similar example. $600 |

2338. Mexico, Mayan "cylinder vase", circa 550 to 900 A.D. Most likely from the coastal region of Guatemala, and dates fairly accurately to the end of the Classic Period, This piece is rendered in brown ware pottery in slightly-flaring form, and carved with four panels. Two panels depict priests or shamans, one in standing pose, the other kneeling, each with elaborate headdress and textured skirt. The other two panels show serpent gods. All panels highlighted with added cinnabar. Measures: 5-1/2" tall by 5-1/2" in diameter. The vessel appears choice but has been professionally repaired from 3 large pieces with repaint only over break lines and no new added clay. Ex private Arizona Collection. Honduras |

2342. Honduras, Maya, c. 600 – 800 AD. This fine polychrome jar has a 5-3/4" diameter and is a superb example of a toad vessel, Bufo Marinus to be specific, with its appliquéd head protruding from the vessel, legs molded in relief and the body decorated with painted jaguar spots. Toxins from the glands of this amphibian were used to produce a hallucinogenic substance for ritualistic ingestion as part of the "way" ceremony. The shaman would enter a cave, believed to be the entrance to the Underworld of Xibalba and ingest hallucinogenic substances in order to make contact with the spirits and ancestors. It is highly likely that these were the vessels used to contain these substances. The rim band features three seated chiefs and each side has an unusual Glyph. In excellent condition, with good dendrites. See Schmidt’s Maya, page 647, for similar examples. $800

2343. Costa Rica, Guanacaste region, c. 1200 – 1500 AD. A fine corseted olla, 6” diameter, decorated with a solar/rainbow motif. The burnished red-brown slip covers the bottom of the vessel, as well as much of the interior. The painted designs are executed on the plain buff clay. Good deposits and root marks overall. $150 |

2344. Costa Rica, Nicoya Peninsula, c. 800-1200AD, a decorative ceramic “rattle” figure of a standing feline figure, probably a jaguar supporting a large open bowl on its back. Figure stands on all fours. Sides of bowl and head are nicely painted in shades of brown and red polychrome. Mouth is open-work with rattle inside. Age cracks evident on portion of hind quarter. 2349. Panama, Chiriqui, c. 1200-1500AD., a nice tripod vessel, said to have been found near Bugavita, in an area 30 miles northwest of David. Legs are all hollow with intricate open-work and with small effigy head at top. Pellets inside legs (only one still intact). Nice burnished toning on creme colored slip. H:6". $150 |

2351. Dominican Republic, c. 1000 1400 AD. Wonderful Taino Zemi in stone. Found in Boca De Yuma, These Zemis were thought to represent Taino deities, and were known to have been used in ceremonies held by village Caciques. Most Zemis represent skeletal or skull deities from the afterlife and were attributed supernatural powers. This piece depicts human-like creature on belly with simplistically stylized head, large pointed handle for torso and hind legs protruding at back. In excellent choice condition with no visible loss. 2352. Dominican Republic, c. 1000 1400 AD., Wonderful Taino Zemi in stone. Found in Boca De Yuma, The Taino people produced three-cornered stones, known as trigonolitos, over a broad expanse of time that allowed for evolution of their form. Early examples are small in size and believed to have been privately owned, while later larger sculptures may have been used in public ceremony. Trigonolitos are known in plain and decorated examples, and, as they are concave on the bottom, many do not sit comfortably on a flat surface. A prevalent image among them is that of this compelling face, with large, sunken eye sockets and a wide, toothless mouth. The face has a particularly fierce, skeletal aspect, an imposing quality often found in Taino art. This example bears a pattern of concentric circles on its opposite side. Used in ceremonial gatherings and attributed supernatural powers. In excellent condition with no losses. L: 7", H: 5.25". RARE! $900 |

2359. Colombia, Calima, c. 500 – 100 BC. This excellent alcarraza type vessel is 6-1/2” high, has a 5-3/4” diameter and depicts a birthing scene. The face is expressive, the coif is finely incised and the hands supporting the back of the head are superbly detailed. The body of the vessel is delicately incised with the characteristic diamond patterns. See Labbe's Colombia Before Columbus, page 57, for similar example. $600 |

2360. Colombia, Narino Quillasinga chalice, ca, 850 – 1500 AD. . Vessel has a spotted jaguar in black resist paint over red. Feline holds bowl shaped chalice from its base atop. Nice detail and facial expression. This cup with circular base measures approximately 6.25” in height with a 6" bowl diameter. Found in choice condition with no restoration or damage, it has some nice surface deposits attesting to its age and wonderful appeal. $650 |

2361. Colombia, A wonderful Narino “Coquero”. Vessel has the individual seated with a coca wad in mouth and showing on the inside of its right cheek. The person bears up to a dozen original human teeth and molars, found with the vessel at the point of burial, and most likely worn as a necklace. It measures 6.5” in height, ca 850 – 1500 AD. Found in perfect state mint condition with no repairs or damage and nice soil deposits on surface. $650 |

A lovely jar, 3-1/2” diameter, decorated with a variety of negative resist designs, including triangles of stylized jaguar pelts and panels with step-fret patterns. 2365. Columbia, Quimbaya, c. 1200 - 1400 AD., a large and unusually made seated ceramic male figure. Unusual in that it is not flat and solid like most other similar figures but instead is hollow and more three-dimensional. Male figure is in typical pose with short and stubby right arm held upwards, left arm bends into chest. Facial detail with incised horizontal linear design. Some original paint still remains on pale red slip. Much repair is evident to entire piece but still attractive and all original. H: 14". $800 |

2366. Colombia, Sinu, lower Magdalena “Poporo” style vase. This old and rare vessel in white slip has incised dotted decoration around its neck. This is an older example of Sinu pottery probably pre-dating 600 AD. It measures just below 6” in height; slight rim chipping otherwise with no losses or restoration and in excellent overall condition. $250 |

2367. Colombia, Sinu, lower Magdalena dagger, probably pre-dates 600 AD, carved from bone deer antler. It depicts “Cacique” or chief at top as part of the handle and probably for ceremonial use. This piece has been wonderfully carved with sharp detail, found almost in petrified state which attests to age. It measures 9.25” in length and Found in good solid condition with some eroded loss to the tip of the dagger, but with some interesting surface deposits. $650 |

It measures approximately 7.25” in length and has a superb carving of a low estuary bird most likely a pelican. 2370. Colombia, Sinu, lower Magdalena, ca 600 – 1500 AD. carved monkey carved in bone. It probably stood as the tip of a shamanic wand or ceremonial staff. It depicts animal in seated position with curled tail and with hands together holding possible offering. It measures 6” on stand and 4.4” without mount. Found in excellent condition, carved in exquisite detail with 3 circular incised designs on lower carving, nice facial expression and has a rich patina. $550 |

2371. Colombia, Sinu, c. 600-1500AD., lower Magdalena bone carved amulet. It depicts priestly shaman in wonderful detail showing cone headdress not unlike the Coggi and Wayoo tribes of the present day Sierra Nevada of Colombia. It is carved in wonderful detail with a rich patina attesting age, measures 3.5” in height. Found with only minor loss to the tip of headdress but otherwise in nice condition. $500 |

The necklace has a wonderful carving of a frog in red carnelian at its center measuring about an inch in length. It is found in excellent condition and very wearable. $450 |

2379. Colombia, Tairona, c. 1000-1500AD., necklace. It is mainly made of shell, jade, and agate beads. The highlights of this 17” long ancient necklace are the unique “bala” or bullet Tairona beads together with a striking effigy as its center piece. This pendant carving is in agate and depicts a standing human figure with hands held to stomach; with lovely detail measuring 0.75” in length. Necklace is strung with a modern clasp and ready to wear. $550

2383. Colombia, a Tuza bowl from the Narino highlands 850 – 1500 AD. This shallow bowl in wonderful red ocher over cream depicts a wonderful hunting scene with two felines attacking male deer, while female deer suckles young and another cub looks by. It measures 3.5: deep by 8” in its diameter. An unusual hunting scene, some minor repairs evident but not detract from appeal and overall beauty of the bowl. $850 |

2385. Venezuela, c. 800 – 1,200 AD., umbian pottery from archaeological the site of Trujillo in Venezuela. Wonderful human effigy, body adorned in black paint negative resist over cream. Figurine set with arms akimbo. These figurines have been described from Shamanic in power to fertility talisman kept by women during pregnancy. Refer “Arte Pre-Hispanico de Venezuela” by Arroyo y Cruzent & Perez Soto de Atencio. Approximately 7” in height, Found in good condition with repairs to both arms. $500 |

2387. Ecuador, Chorrera, c. 500 – 100 BC. This late example is 7 ½” high and depicts a monkey deity crouching on top of the vessel. The almost grotesque facial features are boldly rendered, the slip is highly burnished and showing good deposits. See Valdez’s Amerindian Signs for similar examples. $650 |

2388. Ecuador, Jamacoaque, c. 350 BC – 400 AD. This excellent depiction of an elder is 8” tall and is depicted in an animated speaking gesture, with arms in motion and the head slightly tilted. The superbly detailed face is covered with the delicately incised tattoos indicative of the old man’s elite status. He is adorned with an incised necklace and matching bracelets. Good gold and blue pigment remnants. $500 |

2401. Peru, Chancay, c. 1000-1300AD., This is a wonderfully delicate, ancient textile woven in northern Peru. Textile was woven of fine camelid fibers. Textile measures 27" long x 24" wide. 2403. Peru, A rare pre-Chavin, c. 2500BC, fertility effigy from central Peru. This effigy is modeled in low fired clay, showing nude female in all its detail. These types of effigies were probably ingested by women during pregnancy to ensure safe deliveries. These practices still conducted in remote communities and refer to by anthropologists as “Geophagy”. Effigy measures approximately 2.75” in height. $400 |

This interesting example most likely originated near Tembladera in the Jequetepeque Valley and depicts 4 nicely incised feline heads in typical "Gragonian" style. 2407. Peru, Rare Chavin or probably early Moche single spout owl effigy. This beautiful rendition of Chavin pottery art displays characteristic style “Chongoyape” style spout. This much revered owl in ancient Peruvian societies were responsible for assisting the life giving Sun deities find their way from nights to mornings. This vessel has incised detail with black color pigments over red ochre. Owl stands alert on rotund base. It measures approximately 7” in height, ca 200BC – 100 AD. 2410. Peru, Chimu, c. 1100 - 1350 AD. A wonderful transitional piece, blending stylistic attributes of the Chimu and Lambayeque cultures, ca. This 6-1/4" high vessel features a lively dancer, wearing an incised loincloth and cap. He is surrounded by swimming toyos, a flat-headed type of coastal shark, which are painted on the dome of the vessel. A pair of large crabs lurk under the spout. This iconography depicts a celebrating fisherman thanking the Gods for his success. The overall design is Chimu, but the paint style and some of the decorative patterns show the Sican influence. In excellent condition, far more detailed than the images convey. $450 |

2411. Peru, Chimu, c. 1100 - 1450 AD. This excellent figural blackware pitcher is 7-1/4” high and features four molded panels, which depict two of the most important characters from Moche mythology. Wrinkle Face, with his belt of serpents, is shown in flight and the Crested Animal is depicted on a stylized reed boat. A typical Chimu head forms the flared spout. This exceptional example is in excellent condition and shows the enormous influence Moche styles had on Chimu artisans. See Donnan’s Moche Fineline Painting, page 185, for a similar example. $300 |

2413. Peru, Chimu, c.1100 – 1450 AD. This fine erotic pacha is 7" high and 7 ¼” long. The figure is formed in relief around the stippled body of the vessel, with the large phallus forming the spout. The ominous looking head is topped with a perforated crown that has a pointed visor projecting over the nose. Pachas were ceremonial vessels used in fertility rituals for the sole purpose of passing water through them. Nicely burnished, in excellent condition.
