17. Pedrusi, Paolo. I CESARI IN ORO (also in silver and baser metals). 8 Volumes.
(Volumes 9 & 10 finished much later by P. Pio). Parma. 1694-1727. Folio, original leather bindings, well worn, but intact. Text is excellent with frontispieces in each volume except vol. VI with many foldout, plates etc. A volume must be seen to be fully appreciated. This was probably the earliest attempt at Sylloge format. Each emperor is described in the text and then hand drawn coin images are on plates next to text covering all Roman coins in all metals. Vol. I covers the gold coinage from Pompey to Zeno; Volumes II, III, IV are on the silver coins J. Caesar to Trajan in Vol. II, Hadrian to Geta in Vol. III, Macrinus to Heraclius in Vol. IV. Volume V is on the medals of J. Caesar to Valentinian, Volumes VI through VIII are on the sestertii to fractional Roman bronze coins. Each volume is complete in its own right. Even contorniates are included. The quality of the text is first rate. The set needs cover care, as the contents are great. $2,500
