644. Holland, a two-tier banker’s coin scale made by Guilliam Neves of Amsterdam, 1647. This fine old wooden box has two hasp-hook locks. The upper lid’s original, but somewhat worn, label has a central vignette depicting the banker or money changer holding an equal arm balance. Stacks of coins are on the table, and a skeletal figure appears to be helping in the count. On the top lid is the equal arm balance with a round and a triangular pan and squared recesses for thirteen brass weights. One empty compartment with a wood slide contained thin fractional weights. A brass awl holds the slide shut and also releases the second tray of square brass weights. There are eighteen choice weights on this tray making a total of forty-two. Inked listings of the weights are still discernible on the box. Dimensions: 15.2 x 8.5 x 2.8 mm. The slide, although of proper style and fit, is of a different wood than the box and may be a modern addition. There is a small chip near the middle weight by the scale’s pointer that can easily be repaired. With a bit of restoration the resultant scale would be an outstanding addition to any scale and weights collection. See Vele Anderen, 300 MUNTGEWICHT DOOSJES, Amstelveen, 1983, p.19,20. $7500-10,000 |
645. France, First Republic, c. 1800. A virtually mint moneyer’s scale in a rectangular wooden box with rounded edge and two hasp locks. On the top lid is a detailed label with listing of the weights of the coins in circulation. Two complete sets of nested gram weights are on each end of the box. Two notched slides provide a compartment for the extra fractional weights. Dimensions: 17.5 x 5 x 2 cm. The equal arm balance and pan are all in brass. A very fresh and complete two hundred year old scale! $500 |
646. Gold Scales, c. 1850, an equal arm balance scale. The copper beam is covered with inspection counter marks. On each side of the beam F M 10 K is prominently stamped. The base of the scales has two square thick blocks of wood, stacked one atop the other, upon which stands the graceful copper center post. The beam has a fixed pointer which must point straight upwards when equilibrium is attained. Each round copper pan has three iron chains to steady the heavy gold bars and ponderous weights in the balancing process. Dimensions:29”= width of beam; 45 1/4”= height of central beam; 15” = diameter of each pan. This scales was acquired years ago by a prominent Los Angeles book dealer, Jake Zeitlin, who claimed he found it in an old bank in the California gold country. This attractive piece graced the Zeitlin book store’s collection of scientific instruments for years prior to its purchase by the current consignor. $1000JLM library |
