580. France, c. before 1800, a small Nurnberg type of nested weight master cup with fleur de lis hall mark and an 8 on top of lid. There are no nested cups within. Instead there is one 30 mm disc with five concentric circles giving the illusion of five cups. This disc was most likely fashioned by an Akan goldsmith who had the master cup and created his own “nested set.” This cup was found with a large hoard of European weights mixed with Akan Tribal brass gold weights (a Dja.). 598. Burma, prior to the16th century. A bird weight, evenly worn with stone.(pegmatite core). Gear on p. 49, plate 8 depicts this type of weight with the note that the technique of covering stone with bronze was employed in Thailand around 14 A. D. Around the dense round base are impressions of an early script. A bird called a “hentha” sits in roosting posture. It has a very thick tail. The hentha became the most frequently used animal on this long series of so-called “opium weights.” Similar to lot 7 in Malter Auction of Nov. 24, 2002. This example is better preserved. The square weights were used in the 16th-18th centuries and can be “useful” in filling those blank spaces in the coin scales. $100+ |
