Slavery & Slave Trade Items
2254. West Africa, NIGERIA, 18th-19th centuries, a small hoard of manillas the currency of choice between the slave traders in West Africa. These bangle-like copper objects were actually bronze ingots with carefully figured values based on the value of copper. A great many such objects were produced in Europe, especially in Birmingham, England where they were shipped to Benin and easily blended into the slave trade. They were used as currency as late as 1948 when Colonial laws made them illegal. Occasionally a small hoard is discovered in the bush and makes its way into the international coin trade. There are many reference books on "odd and curious" money of the world that describe manillas in great detail. The manillas in this hoard were known as "popo" manillas. Their terminals were 19 mm. circles. See Johansson, Nigerian Currencies fold-out plate, p. 12. Manillas were used as bracelets by the Nigerians. Johansson in the Supplement to his book evaluated the popo size manillas at $35 each in 1968, (p. 7.) This lot consists of fifty pieces. Not a Whitten lot. $500/50 Image
