Ancient
2001. Etruscans, Monte Sannace Complex, 1. fourth century before Christ. A black ware ceramic guttus (oil lamp filler). The base clay is red. The guttus has a single ring handle and a tall spout for filling small oil lamps. There is a bas relief medallion of the head of a Negro, in profile, looking to the right. See Marie-Odile Jentel, LES GUTTI ET LES ASKOI A RELIEFS ETRUSQUE ET APULIEN, QUEBEC, 1976, 2 volumes. See vol. I pl. XLVI for similar guttus which is in the Louvre. Original tag reads, “The original of this doll was carved by Maynard Arnett and reproduced in a wood resin.
