Bronze

132. Kushite Period, Dynasty XXV, 760 - 656 BC. A large bronze statuette of Isis seated suckling the infant Horus. Wonderfully modeled, she wears a solar disc and horns and has silver inlaid eyes. Elegantly styled with a beautiful green patina. Tip of one horn, left arm and most of Horus missing. A truly magnificent piece with great detail throughout! H: 8.25". $3500 image

133. Late Period, 664 – 323 BC. A pair of bronze eyes and brows with original stone inlays. An attractive pair and nicely mounted in a custom stand. Width 5 ½”. $2000 image

134. Late Period, 664 – 323 BC. A large bronze Atef feather from a large figure of Osiris. Nice detailing and mounted on a stand. H: 6 ½”. $200 image

Varia

135. 2 nd Intermediate Period, 1750 – 1570 BC. A lot of 4 terracotta heads from the ‘Tel-Yehudia” type female fertility figures. Each is mounted on its’ own custom stand and average 1” in height. These are becoming more difficult to come by. $200/4 image

136. New Kingdom, 1570 – 1070 BC. An alabaster offering table of two parts, a cylindrical base and a wide, flat disc. Intact with nice coloration. $1500 image

137. Late period, 664 – 323 BC. A nice pair of eyes, which would have inlaid into a statue. They consist of limestone with faience inlays for the whites of the eyes. Intact with some fading. A real interesting lot. Average width 1 ½”. $200/2 image

138. Late period, 664 – 323 BC. A mask from the netting of a mummy composed of various colored faience beads. Reconstructed from the original beads as the original threading had weathered away. A nice example with tube bead fringe. 6” x 5 ¼”. $325 image

140. Late period, 664 – 30 BC. A lovely mummy bead necklace with 3 small faience amulets. Also 2 pairs of single strand mummy bead earrings. $300/lot image

141. Ptolemaic Period, c.3 rd – 2 nd Century BC. A nice cartonnage collar with much remaining gilding and blue and red pigmentation. Design consists of a dual winged spread at the top with falcons to each side. Collar decoration consists of alternating bands of triangles and rosette style patterns. Largely intact with some minor losses and framed. Measurements 12” x 8 ½”. $800 image

142. Ptolemaic Egypt, 4 th – 3 rd Century BC. A small steatite juglet with two incised parallel lines around the throat of this perfect little piece. H: 5cm. $200 image

143. Roman Period, 1 st – 2 nd Century AD. A stucco mask with some of the gilding remaining as well has the pigmentation of the cosmetic details. Some minor restoration. An attractive and displayable piece. H: 6”. $5000 image

144. Roman Period, 1 st – 2 nd Century AD. A mold made terracotta figurine of a standing Harpokrates, his index finger of his right hand rests on his mouth, his left arm supports a jug. He wears tall and pointed headdress. Repaired but still attractive. H: 7.25". $700 image

145. Roman Period, 1 st – 2 nd Century AD. A mold made terracotta figurine of 2 standing Nubian figures, both cloaked in flowing gowns and wearing headdresses. Some of original red polychrome still evident. H: 5.25". $800 image

Coptic Textiles

154. A fragmentary linen textile, 4 th – 5 th Century, with oval medallions containing various flora and fauna. Linear and animal motifs fill the fields. 2 general tattered pieces measuring 13” and 17” in length. Interesting if anything. $150 image

155. Lot of 3 garment fragments, 5 th – 7 th Century. Each with floral or animal motifs and nice black and red colors. Lengths roughly 8”, 5 ½” & 4 ½”. Another good study lot for those interest in ancient fabrics or weaving technique. $150 image

156. A lot of 3 parts from the same linen garment, 3 rd – 4 th Century, in rich brown and tan. Intricate linear motifs and quite nice work despite the condition. Lengths 9”, 8 ½” & 4”. Could be nicely framed and displayed. $200 image

157. A thin, almost gauze-like linen textile fragment, 5 th – 7 th Century, with 4 small embroidered images, 2 are winged “angels” and the other to are floral types. Colors include red and black on a tan field. Length 8 ½”. $150 image

158. A lot of 2 fragmentary textiles, 5 th – 7 th Century, showing nice coloring and details in floral motifs. Colors include green, red, black and brown on a tan background. Lengths 8 ½” & 8”. $150 image

159. A relatively attractive linen textile panel, while in a fragmentary state, shows much intricate design and details. A medallion contains a crouching figure surrounded by floral and vegetal motifs. An oblong vignette also contains human, animal and vegetal decorations. Colors include green, red, black, white and yellow on a tan background. The hemmed edge of the garment is to one side and adds to the attractiveness of this interesting panel, which is from the 5 th – to 7 th Century. Measures 12” x 8” and would be quite pleasing if artistically framed and mounted. $300 image

160. A large fragmentary wool and linen textile, 4 th – 6 th Century, with many intricate animal and vegetal motifs. If properly mounted and framed it would be quite attractive. Fabric here is much thicker than that found in the previous lots and has a rich maroon color on a crème field. Very roughly 26” x 13”. $350 image

168. Lot of 3 wooden items, 2 small wooden Horus falcons and a larger falcon missing the wing section. Some minor evidence of pigment and all from the Ptolemaic Period. Length from 1 ½” to 5 3/8”. $100/3 image

170. Thessaly, c. 4th millennium BC. A seated terra cotta buxom 'Astarte" female figure with chubby arms and legs and highly stylized face wearing turban. Her arms are across her chest supporting her breasts. Front side of piece is painted with thin horizontal lines in pale red and brown polychrome. Five continuous horizontal lines adorn the backside of seated figure. H: 3.25". $850 image

171. Hellenistic, c. 300BC. A lovely translucent glass bowl with ribbed bottom. Wonderful iridescence and perfect. D: 8”. A very attractive example! $2000 image

172. Hellenistic, c. 300BC. A miniature dark blue glass flask with thin loop handle and adorned with diamond design in pale blue trailing. H: 1.75". Rare! $375 image

173. Greece, Hellenistic Period, before 146 BC. A red buff clay mold-made head of Athena with an eagle in her headdress. On wood stand. Height of head only: 110.8 cm. Deaccessioned from the Camarillo Bird Museum. Nice quality. $325 image

Greek Pottery

178. Greek South Italy, Daunian, c. 6 th Century BC. A double handled kyathos. Typical crème slip with beautifully applied brown linear design on inside and out as well as on bottom of bowl. Holy Land

187. Roman, c. 3 rd Century AD. A glass vial with ridged body and flaring top. Unfortunately, there’s a small chip off the top. H: 8 cm. $65 image

188. A large olive oil storage vessel with central hole for faucet, now missing. There is minor incised decoration around the rim. On the jar's shoulder, incised, is a Star of David with three small circles within the star. The piece needs scientific testing to determine when it was originally fired. It is certainly "antique." Some dirt inside should be cleaned out. A perfect candidate for an umbrella stand. H:30". Ex Westlake Estate. $2000 image

195. Roman, 2 nd – 3 rd Century AD. A large gold ring with a wide decorated bezel set with a nice carnelian intaglio depicting Juno standing lt., holding a patera and sceptre. Ring is of hollow construction, but is quite substantial and very wearable. Bezel measures 22x19mm. Ring size about 9 ½. $1800 image

196. Roman, 2 nd – 3 rd Century AD. A nice silver ring with a sloping shoulders and a small round bezel inscribed LVG V. Could be a legionary ring. Intact and wearable. Ring size 9. $400 image

197. Roman, c.3 rd Century AD. A gold ring set with a carnelian intaglio with a lion standing rt. Intaglio is well carved with good detail. The outside of the bezel is decorated with a nice rope pattern and gold beads adorn the four corners. In god condition with signs of previous use. Ring size about 6 to 6 ½ and wearable. $800 image

198. Roman, 3 rd – 4 th Century AD. A heavy gold ring with an oval bezel depicting a pair of clasped hands. A popular marriage type of ring. Bezel measures 15x12mm. Ring size about 5 ½. Wearable. $900 image

Mosaics

199. Roman, c. 3rd century "style" Mosaic depicting the facing head of Medusa.  The well-defined head of Medusa is within in a circular black and brown border and is adorned with hair of living, venomous snakes (hair is brown, snakes, green). The tesserae measure 5mm square and are in subtle shades of yellow, green, black, brown, blue and beige. Face of Medusa is stoic in expression as she appears to glance slightly upwards. Actual mosaic is 24" in diameter and is set in square frame and reinforced with plaster. Actual size of frame is 28" square. A great decorator item; one that can be hung, made into a table top or perhaps sunk into the foundation of one's home.    $3500 image

200. Roman, c. 3rd century "style" Mosaic depicting the facing head of Medusa. Similar to above piece except this one is square. Medusa with bright red lips has two small serpents that appear on top of her head. Small wing appears immediately behind each snake. Her long flowing hair is in dark brown and black tesserae, eyes are blue, her cheeks and forehead are in white. Her head appears to float on white background of white tesserae with her face, snakes and her wings in shades of flesh tones. Face of Medusa is stoic in expression . S: 26" x 25". Excellent condition.  A great decorator item; one that can be hung, made into a table top or perhaps sunk into the foundation of one's home.    $3500 image

206. Indus-Valley, c.2500 – 2000 BC. A large deep bowl with narrow mouth decorated with 3 river fish. Nice pigmentation with light-blue and red remaining within the black outline. Intact and quite attractive. H: 3 ¾”; D: 6 ¾”. $1200 image

207. Indus-Valley, c.2000 – 1000 BC. A terracotta effigy in the form of 2 humped bulls, side by side. Some linear decoration in dark pigment on back. Intact and interesting. L: 2 ½”. $125 image

208. Nal Culture, c.3000 – 2500 BC. A pair of incised marble gaming or chess pieces with a distinctive Indus Valley motif incised along the tops of both pieces. The tops of each have been partially drilled. H: 4.5 cm. Rare! $350/2 image

209. Nal Culture, c.3000 – 2500 BC. A small box lot of six Indus Valley ceramic bowls, all broken and in need of restoration. Most of the pieces are accountable. Some of the bowls have nice painted designs. A chance to acquire some of the world’s oldest pottery at a very reasonable price. $200/6 image

210. Nal Culture, c.3000 – 2500 BC. A rare two-piece stone idol. A bareheaded limestone male head (nose chipped) atop a brown stone torso. The torso has incised designs and a groove atop the neck for the placement of the head.. See V. Sarianidi, DIE KUNST DES ALTEN AFGHANISTAN, pp.12-128 for head; G. Ligabue, BACTRIA, p. 176, fig. 20 for torso with heads. These idols are quite rare. From an old collection. $1500 image

219. Bactria, c. 2000 BC. A hematite “donut-shaped” mace-head with central shaft hole. D: 6.3 cm. $275 image

220. Bactria, c. 2000 BC. A large terra cotta mold 9.0 cm. in diameter with a long bent-necked goose beside a serpent’s head within a circular border of two concentric circles with evenly spaced pellets around. The back side is plain. There are no parallels in the references for these moulds. Extraordinary with minor peripheral chips. $650 image

221. Bactria, c. 2000 BC. A self-standing figurine of a female in grayer terra cotta. She wears a necklace and has a very elaborate hair do. H: 7 cm. See J. Aruz, ed., ART OF THE FIRST CITIES, p. 382, fig.268a.for the face. $350 image

222. Bactria, c. 2000 BC. A terra cotta bottle top with applied human face. D: 45 mm. $175 image

223. Bactria, c. 2000 BC. A mold made votive figure of a standing bearded man who holds a palm frond in his right hand and a fruit in his raised left. Artistic care given to the figure’s facial characteristics. The “Athenian Archaic” style is quite evident. $350 image

224. Bactria, c.300 - 100 BC. A reddish terra cotta mold or stamp seal with a female rider atop a horse or hippocamp, a bird in field behind. The rider appears awkwardly upon the horse, her back and shoulders are clear, and she appears to be nude. This is probably a classical scene from the days of Alexander’s incursion into Afghanistan. D: 7.3 cm. There is a definite handle on the back. Ex Malter Galleries June 2004 #57. $300 image

225. Bactria, c. 2000 BC. A finely carved marble duck gaming piece. In reddish marble, duck with choice detail and inlaid eyes. L: 1.75". $550 image

226. Murghab Basin, Margiana, c. 2000 BC. A two sided small seal with a serpent and human form stand facing each other/a stick figure. Pierced for wearing. Dim:12 x 18 mm. A small chip on one side. $100 image

227. Murghab Basin, Margiana, c. 2000 BC. A two sided small chlorite seal with lion in pouncing position on each side. Holed longitudinally. Dim:33x30 mm. A wonderful deeply engraved seal. $300 image

228. Murghab Basin, Margiana, c. 2000 BC. A two sided smaller chlorite seal with a standing lion on one side and a hare on the other. Holed longitudinally. Dim: 25x23 mm. Holed longitudinally. A bold seal! $200 image

229. Murghab Basin, Margiana, c. 2000 BC. A two-sided round steatite seal with a kneeling man on one side and an animal with its head turned backward biting its tail. Holed longitudinally. D: 33mm. Small chip on rim of kneeling man. $200 image

231. Bactria, Baluchistan, c. 1500 – 900 BC. A two sided terracotta spool stamp seal with 11 petals on one side and 14 on the other. H: 4 cm. $100 image

232. Bactria, c. 1200-800 BC. A carved round disc, domed on one side and very nicely carved in bas relief on the other. The carving depicts a horseman with long hair queue. His archaic eye is quite the dominant feature on his face, although his long pointed nose is considerably evident. D: 47 mm. Perhaps a lid for a cosmetic box or an inlay. Unpublished, this may be a trade piece from Iran or points to the north. Nice! $750 image

233. Kushan, Baroda, c. 100 BC – AD 100. A small mold-made terra cotta figurine of a standing dwarf-like figure known as a “Yaksa.” The figure is legless, his arms are up on his chest; he wears a necklace and belt, but his private parts are exposed. Somewhat similar to the Mediterranean equivalent—Priapus. H: 6 cm. See M. K. Dhavalikar, MATHURA ART IN THE BARODA MUSEUM, pl. XI, fig. 32. $275 image

234. Small Ancient Bronze Coin Hoard, KUSHANS. c.100 BC – AD 150. This twenty plus group of coins has been set aside for years in anticipation of finding sufficient time to tackle the cleaning. Alas! It is even more formidable a task today as it was years ago. So for those numismatic masochists out there who love a challenge, here’s a noteworthy project. All coins as is, no reserves, no returns. $150 image

248. Luristan, c.1200 – 1000 BC. A cast copper dagger with short, broad, leaf-shaped blade made separately from the hilt. Four parallel blood channels go down the blade on both sides. The hollow cast handle is decorated by round pellets placed close to each other. One rivet hole is empty the other rivet for connecting the blade to the handle is still covered and intact. L:22 cm. The South Arabian taste for abstract forms is reflected in the treatment of the smooth beard combined with a more naturalistic rendering of the face derived from a Greco-Roman style of sculpture. 304. India, Bodhisattva, Gahadavala, 10th-11th century, a slightly smaller than life size carved head in typical black chlorite of a goddess. Rounded head with benign and peaceful facial expression. Bow-shaped mouth with a full lower lip, short straight nose, open eyes downcast and narrow eyebrows in relief. Her elaborate coiffure, which flows to the right side as view from the front is incised with wavy lines, and spiral curls framing her forehead and ending in a coiled top knot. She is adorned with a headdress of 3 lion masks holding festooned jewels. Her bejeweled left ear finely carved with an elaborate serpentine braid surmounted by flowers. Height is 8.5" by 8" wide. Head and marble base weigh 26 pounds. A similar example in the National Museum, New Delhi, describes as Rajgarth, Alwar, Rajasthan. Of excellent workmanship with nice patina throughout. $5,000 image
