1318. South Italy, Apulia, c. 330 BC. A Calene-ware guttus used to hold and dispense scented oils for bathing. The very old and out of date title of "lamp filler" is inaccurate and erroneous. These can be seen being used as such in some of the bathing scene frescos at Pompeii and elsewhere and is also evidenced by the type of spout which only dispenses a small drop at a time, by the ring handle, and especially the incised ridging along the outside of the vase so that in wet, oily hands it would not slip and fall. The medallion of the Negroid head in profile is quite rare and I have only personally seen 3 others (2 of the identical mold) and have seen in museums and in books 3 others. During the period which is the time of Alexander the Great, images of fantastic animals, various gods and goddesses, and also images of rarely encountered "foreigners" from the newly conquered lands were common at that time. See Marie-Odile Jentel, LES GUTTI ET LES ASKOI A RELIEFS ETRUSQUE ET APULIEN, QUEBEC, 1976, 2 volumes. See vol. I pl. XLVI for similar guttus which is in the Louvre. The author cites three known examples. This piece from the E. J. Gold Collection. In perfect condition. Rare! $1000 View Image
1319. Rome, c. 1st - 2nd Century AD. A lot of 7 implements, 6 of bone including 3 needles, 2 one point hairpins and a spindle whorl, also included is a silver medical instrument. L: 3 1/8” to 6 3/16”. No Roman lady would be seen in public with undressed hair, whether an elaborate arrangement with a jeweled diadem or a plain plaited bun. Women only wore their hair down during mourning or certain religious festivals. Roman ladies and women also used thin wool bands called vittae to tie their hair back and when in public covered their hair with veils or part of their palla. Roman hairpins came in a huge range of styles from plain to extremely elaborate and in a wide variety of materials, from wood to ivory to bronze to gold. A typical arrangement could be several smaller hairpins in the front and sides of a woman’s hair and one or two of the longer type through the back. South Italian pottery scenes as well as many of the images of women from Pompeii depict the various arrangement of hairstyles and the use of hairpins by the Greco-Roman lady. $250 View Image
