ANTIQUE CANE COLLECTION OF STEPHEN GRUBB ALONG WITH OTHER CONSIGNORS.

Stephen Grubb (1919-2003) Cane Collection

By profession a highly respected trademark attorney, with an office in Encino for many years, Stephen Grubb was a collector by passion. He would focus on collecting primarily one type of object at a time—whether watches, vintage pens and pencils, objets d’art, or decorative canes. Always eager to learn, Mr. Grubb would immerse himself in each new interest, reading voraciously and talking enthusiastically with dealers.

His tastes were eclectic, though with a consistent preference for fine materials and distinctive designs. He particularly appreciated details such as an elaborate monogram or an intriguing inscription that brought the past to life. Though never trained in connoisseurship—art history wasn’t taught at his one-room Nebraska schoolhouse—he had an infallible eye. His instinctive good taste, intellectual curiosity, and pure pleasure in buying shaped the remarkable collection seen here.
