A Modest Collection of Roman Bone Hairpins
No Roman lady would be seen in public with undressed hair, whether an elaborate arrangement with a jeweled diadem or a plain plaited bun. Women only wore their hair down during mourning or certain religious festivals. Roman ladies and women also used thin wool bands called vittae to tie their hair back and when in public covered their hair with veils or part of their palla. Roman hairpins came in a huge range of styles from plain to extremely elaborate and in a wide variety of materials, from wood to ivory to bronze to gold. A typical arrangement could be several smaller hairpins in the front and sides of a woman’s hair and one or two of the longer type through the back. South Italian pottery scenes as well as many of the images of women from Pompeii depict the various arrangement of hairstyles and the use of hairpins by the Greco-Roman woman.
