4. EGYPT, c.1000 BC. A limestone "Daric" weight in the form of a reclining duck with its head on its back. L: 23 mm., 8.13 gm. Cp. Petrie #2415 a hematite weight. 7. EGYPT, pre 1000 BC. A lot of three geometrical (conical, domed and cup-cake.) hematite "qedet" weights. See Petrie, plates III-VI for examples. All choice. view image $300/3
8. BABYLONIA before 1000 BC. A fine hematite "Daric" weight of standard design, of a reclining duck perfectly carved. L: 21 mm, 8.69 gm. See Kisch, Scales and Weights, p. 95, top left. This piece is from the E. T. Newell collection. He was a major scholar of ancient Greek coins. view image $750
9. PHOENICIA, before 600 BC. A lot of six geometric "Aeginetan" hematite weights ranging in weight from 3.62 to over 50 grams. Plus a Phoenician flattened stone oval weight, with a faint inscription in need of further study. Indication it is a 2 shekel weight L: 3 cm., weight 14.90grams. A scarce lot worthy of further study. view image $475
10. PHOENICIA, before 700 BC. A dome-shaped limestone weight with a crude inscription that resembles paleo-Phoenician script. This weight resembles the domed Judaean weights offered below, and although chipped it would have been valued as an eight shekel weight. Diameter: 30 mm, weight 90 grams. view image $500

35. ROME, c. 200 AD. A steelyard bell shaped weight with an unusual hallmark stamped on it. The bottom of the bell-shaped looped weight depicts two standing females on each side of a large storage vessel. The figure on left holds a spear the other with cornucopias. Above the bowl: a horse's head. The storage vessel has three decorations in relief. Ex Malter Auction No. 29 July 2000. H: 6 cm. view image $1000
36. ROME, c. early first to fourth centuries AD. A lot of four looped steelyard scale weights varying in weight from a low of 13.55 gm to a high of over fifty grams. One round weight ex Linville collection Lot #21, weighs 45.59 gm. Two are lead and two are bronze. No inscriptions are discernible. view image $300/4
37. ROME, c. early fourth century AD. A rare weight in molded glass for an uncia (32.21 gm), It features a quadriga facing forward, with outer horses shown in profile. Charioteer with right hand held aloft and holding scepter in left. Fine and important. Ex Frank Linville collection, lot 64 in Malter Auction 39 held in April, 1989. This is an exceptionally large piece of molded glass to have survived. Rare! view image $!500
38. BYZANTIUM, c. 600-650 AD. A hemispheric commercial domed weight of 3.81 grams, perhaps a sextula. There is a black ovitia mark with a slash line in the center. 39. BYZANTIUM, c. 600-650 AD. A spherical commercial weight with both poles flattened; one pole was inlaid in silver with the sign for ounces and the letter 'B' for two. See Durr, Catalogue des Poids Byzantins, Geneva, #269. Superb. view image $250

A lot of bronze weights, one round with concave poles with many single pellet planes, this double 'uqiya' weight was found with an accompanying ring weight or 37.20 gm. 55. ISLAMIC, Umayyad, c. 7th-8th cent. AD. A lot of three square inscribed weights, two are for uqiyas (ounces) and the third is a half-uqiya. The Arabic inscription needs to be deciphered. All VF or better. view image $250/3

61. IRAN, c. 1700, an octagonal weight for two ounces from a jeweler's scale box. All plane surfaces are filled with drilled dots. This piece was found in Afghanistan. view image $75
62. IRAN, before 1700 BC. A clay weight shaped like a typical steelyard weight but only weighing 45.85 grams. In perfect condition with loop. Dimensions: Height6 cm. Rare! view image $100
63. Ancient loom weights. A lot of three looped conical weights used on looms, one in lead with incised markings in an obscure script, perhaps paleo-Hebrew, (this weight was found in Israel;) a tall slender weight with incised designs on four of the five planes of the weight; and a third lead weight missing its top with loop from a Moorish site in Spain. A very interesting lot of old weights. view image $350

64. AUSTRIA, c. 1800, a brass set of half a kilogram of nested weights with at least one replacement weight. Mark on top: 0.5Kg. The patina is even on all the weights as well as the master cup indicating that they were all used for some time together. See Houben, '5000 Years of Weights', p. 65. view image $225
65. SPAIN, c. 1800, a brass set of nested weights totaling sixteen ounces. Stamped on top of master cup: 16, S. A small bronze plug sits atop stack of brass cup weights. Nice! view image $350
BRITISH STACKED WEIGHTS
66. ENGLAND, 1826, a rare bronze set of stacked weights with London grocer's hallmarks, dated 1826. There are eight stacked weights and each one is hall-marked with the larger weights having more marks than the smaller. A complete and very rare set of weights. 67. ENGLAND, c. 1850, a set of six stacked brass weights. The 2 lb. and the 4 lb. weights are marked: AVERY Ltd. The smallest weight is 1 oz, the largest is 4 lbs. Each weight neatly stacks leaving the margin which is raised on each weight. Used in British post offices. Ex November 7, 1999 Malter Auction. view image $100
68. INDIA, Raj Period, a set of eight brass stacked rupee weights. Each weight is marked for the number of rupees it equated; the smallest was for one rupee, the largest 100 rupees. Similar sets arranged for the pound sterling are known from Victorian England. This is the first we've seen for India. A very nice clean set. view image $500

71. GERMANY, c. 1850, a fine set of thirteen knobbed brass gram weights from one gram up to one kilogram all neatly set in a wood block. Rare this complete and choice. view image $350

MIXED COMMERCIAL WEIGHTS
73. AFGHANISTAN, ca. 19th century, an unusual set of commercial brass weights built upon a loose base, followed by a four or five step pyramids connected with a ring hoop through which one or more brass hoops are inserted. They range from two ounces up to a pound or more. Houben doesn't describe them. They seem to have appeared on the market only recently. Perhaps the markets that used them were involved with the Taliban movement. A set of seven pieces. view image $100/7

75. AFGHANISTAN, dated in Arabic: 1930, set of three hexagonal iron weights with Arabic inscriptions. They range from 10 lbs. down to four ounces. view image $165/3

77. CHINA, Sui Dynasty, ca. 581-618 AD. A glazed steelyard weight of one jin. There are blotches of blue color over a white background. The weight is slightly bell-shaped with a loop on the top for the steelyard scale. H: 9cm. A lovely intact piece attributed by Qin Guangming of the State Bureau of Technology Supervision, Beijing. view image $300
78. ENGLAND, c. 1890, a brass banker's weight for one pound. This weight displaces the equivalent value in copper pence. The weight was used to facilitate the counting of fractional coin change. See Houben, op. cit., p. 89sq. view image $100

SOUTH EAST ASIAN OPIUM WEIGHTS
81. BURMA, prior to the16th century, a bird weight, well-worn with stone (pegmatite core). Gear on p. 49, plate 8 depicts this type of weight with the note that the technique of covering stone with bronze was employed in Thailand around 14 AD. Around the dense round base are impressions of an early script. A bird called a "hentha" sits in roosting posture. It has a very thick tail. The hentha became the most frequently used animal on this long series of so-called "opium weights." Similar to lot 7 in Malter Auction of Nov. 24, 2002. This example is better preserved. 82. BURMA, c. 1700 AD. A fine lion-like "beast" weight with star on base. These weights are more ferocious looking than the henthas. It weighs six pounds and stands on an octagonal base. See Gear p. 65. A superb weight. view image $500

There is some recent research pointing out that only the geometric weights are true weights and that the so-called figurative weights, such as those in this lot, are from the oral tradition of proverbs. A German doctor has convinced me that the figurative pieces don't have the properties of true weights as do the geometrics. (JLM)

205. England, 1753, Darby Steelyard for Gold Coins A steelyard with a flat horizontal beam of brass, (probably the first coin balance to be patented in England no. 686 in 1753). It was invented by W. Bradfort and J. Hulls and made by R. Darby. It has a knife-edged foot below the beam and a clip to hold the coin. The beam length is 8 inches in a long black leather covered cap-end case and has the initials R. D. Extremely rare and in excellent condition. 206. France, c.1795. Jecker folding balance for gold . A folding steelyard type counterfeit detector, but not automatically self-raising. The steelyard is in a flat slender mahogany case. A rectangular counterpoise could be moved over a beam, with graduations in gros and grains. A glued-in label (very good condition) indicates the mass of many different gold coins up to 4 1/2 gros. The set comes with a small set of nested weights which total 3050 gm). There is apparently one large "master" cup missing. There is a hand-written label attached to the lid which provides values of the weights to certain coins. There is also a lidded compartment for four brass fractional weights. 209. France, c.1825, a coin scale with an equal arm balance with a steel beam measuring 14 cm. in length. The pans are copper and measure 5.3 cm in diameter. There are eight knobbed brass weights marked from fifty grammes down to one gramme (with a crown hall-mark). A wood slide conceals several fractional weights. Inside the top lid is a printed label with three columns of coin weights in livres and francs as well as some foreign coin weights. The lid lists the maker as 'Mecanicien'. 214. Peru, Chancay, c.1000-1400 AD. A rectangular wood beam carved in relief on both sides with the same design of a single bas relief fish in each of 4 panels. Still with original strings and very small "pans" made of wood. D 11.4 x1.4 cm (beam). See, Disselhoff, p. 294 for style. view image $1500

216. China, c.1650-1750, a very rare all silver steelyard scale complete with silver rectangular weight which is hall-marked on four sides. The silver pan is scalloped around the rim and has three side by side hall-marks in the center of the pan which has three silver linked chains to suspend the pan from the beam. L: of beam 21 cm, D: of pan 4.5 cm. A delightful scale. view image $650
217. Gold Scales, c.1850, an equal arm balance scale. The copper beam is covered with inspection counter marks. On each side of the beam F M 10 K is prominently stamped. The base of the scales has two square thick blocks of wood, stacked one atop the other, upon which stands the graceful copper center post. The beam has a fixed pointer which must point straight upwards when equilibrium is attained. Each round copper pan has three iron chains to steady the heavy gold bars and ponderous weights in the balancing process. Dimensions: Width of beam is 27 1/2"; Height of central beam is 45 1/4"; Diameter of each pan is 45 1/4". This scale was acquired years ago by a prominent Los Angeles book dealer, Jake Zeitlin, who claim he found it in an old bank in the California gold country. This attractive piece graced the Zeitlin book store's collection of scientific instruments for years prior to its purchase by the current consignor. view image $1000
218. Germany, von Berndt Odendall, 1654 in Koln. An important three tier gold coin scale complete with all the weights. The lid for the fractional weights compartment may be a replacement. The quality is exceptional for the box and weights. The text on the upper lid is still legible and matches perfectly with the Streeter Collection specimen as published by Kisch, 'Gewichte und Waagemacher im Alten Koln', fig. 32A. There are forty square brass weights in all. The two hasp locks work. The tooling on the box is neat and clear. Dim: 15 cm x 8.75 cm x 3.80 cm. Some weights may be replacements but all are contemporary. One of the finest Cologne scales ever made. view image $7500

There is an ivory label warning of costs above 12 oz. that is attached to the base. Dim:21 cm x 11 cm x 11 cm.
