The base of the dial contains a compass with a painted compass rose on the bottom with the cardinal directions clearly spelled out. A fleur de lis decorates the compass rose. A folding gnomen produces a shadow from which the viewer, once he orientates the compass, can read the hour of the day off an exquisitely engraved silver ring. The ring is numbered in Roman numerals from IV through XII and down to VIII. The original glass cover is below the dial. It is still in place but there are two cracks in it.
