C. a rectangular cubed marble seal with drilled designs featuring serpents on two sides, a scorpion on the third side and a god-like standing figure on the last side. 558. Sumeria, Jamdat Nasr, c. 3200 B. C. a fine coral-colored marble cylinder with a shrine and two standing antelopes. There are three occasions where two pellets appear and act as dividers for each quadruped. Tunneled through center of cylinder longitudinally. H: 20 mm, W: 21 mm. See Buchanan, No., 165. 559. Third Early Dynastic Period, c. 2600-2400 B. C. a dark serpentine cylinder, 33 x 16 mm, a kilted hero wielding an axe in rt. Hand, a "T"-shaped sceptre? In left hand frames a smaller hero pursuing a rampant lion who, in turn, appears to be attacking a human-headed bearded bull who holds a steer. For style, cp. Porada #75. This is a boldly carved seal. $1500 View Image

587. Cylinder Seal lot of three pieces including a Proto-Achemenian green frit cylinder, 23 x 7 mm, c. 900-700 B. C. depicting an archer aiming an arrow at an ostrich-like bird. Cf. Porada #813-814 for archer scenes; and a cream-colored chalcedony cylinder, 18 x 8 mm, with a pair of heraldic lions seated below a large winged solar disk. Cf Porada #825 for similar solar disk. 607. Rome, c. 200 A. D. a red jasper intaglio beautifully carved with a seated figure of Minerva, holding a wreath, her shield by the side of the stool. The gem is set in a silver finger ring which has a small chip near the edge. The stone is chipped by Minerva's feet. Still a most attractive and still wearable item. Ring size:5.25. $400 View Image

608. Rome, c. 250 A. D. a yellow agate intaglio set in an iron ring. The nicely engraved stone depicts a Cupid-like youth with a prod below a tree limb which holds a standing bird. 634. Syro-Mittanian or Levantine, c. 1500-1300 B. C. a large quartz crystal bead altered into a scaraboid. Device: a male figure walking in profile, apparently nude but for high conical cap, staff in front. Wear and chipping at longitudinal drill hole, part of original bronze pin still visible within drill hole. L: 24 mm. Interesting and rare. $350 View Image


635. Urartu, c. 900 B. C. a fine bronze looped stamp seal; the base engraved with a flying Pegasus. H: 15 mm. Some surface corrosion apparently cleanable. Cp. Lot 71 above. $500 View Image

643. Roman Ephesus, c. third century A. D. a fine copper ring, broken on the ring but with a great red jasper intaglio of the many-breasted goddess, Diana of Ephesus. The crescent shaped part of the handle which attaches to the pan or patera (there is evidence that this part may be a pastiche), has a cobra head facing the front of the handle and a nice open-work floral pattern. L: with handle 35.5 cm; Diameter of pan: 21 cm. A somewhat similar patera handle is pictured by Babelon, Bronzes Antiques, No. 1428, an Etruscan piece. This handle was found in eastern Europe.
