Steindorff, opp. cit. #648- 650; Leington, The Cat in Egypt, Pg. 58, for a discussion of the sacred eye symbol on #223 a bronze example. Next to iron, silver was the most sought after metal in ancient Egypt, even more desirable than gold, do to its‚ scarcity. This lovely object was acquired by the consignor over 20 years ago from a London dealer who said the piece was from a private London collection of a Persian collector. The piece was thickly covered with bronze patination which probably transferred to the piece from other bronze cats ritually buried with it. This is why no one recognized it as silver and therefore it was sold as a typical bronze cat! It was recently cleaned by a profession museum restorer who left select areas of the bronze patination intact to demonstrate this transference of the bronze over the silver. The fine details of this piece is outstanding. Its silver composition not only makes it beautiful, but extremely rare as well. A masterpiece of ancient Egyptian craftsmanship and a definite museum piece worthy of the finest of collections. POR View Image
