813. British Celts, c.1st Cent. BC – 1st Cent. AD. A fine bronze broach, Winchester type, La Tene III. Angular form with down-turn catch. Chamfer decoration on body. Pleasing dark green patina. Found in Fd. Worthy area near Winchester, England. 47mm in length. Published in Hattatt, 1985, #245; ex. Ashmoleon museum. This type appears to be confined to the Winchester area. The chamfer decoration must be the earliest, presaging its use on Roman crossbow and Anglo-Saxon long brooches. View Image   $450

814. Late Bronze Age, Scythian, c.800 . 600 BC. A beautiful bronze sword, 2 feet long, of slender design. Cast in one piece with just the end of the handle missing. Blade averages 1 1D4" wide with a sharp point. Handle once hand inlays such as bone or wood. Of typical design with a V-shaped end and hilt. Cleaned a bit, but very attractive with much eye appeal. Evidence of sharpening in antiquity as well as edge nicks suggests this deadly item has seen some field use.
